Lake Mead: Another Human Cadaver Discovered as Water Recedes
Authorities announced that more human cadavers were found at Lake Mead National Recreation Area. It is the fourth time that a human cadaver was found in the area, according to a KSL News Radio report.
National Park Service official said in a statement that park rangers got a call on Saturday morning about skeletal remains at the Swim Beach area. It is unclear how the latest human remains were found in the lake.
Lt. Jason Johansson said that the homicide division of Las Vegas Metropolitan Police is not currently handling the probe on the matter. Rangers placed a perimeter at the beach to recover the remains with help from divers from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, according to the Park Service.
Called in the area was a coroner to determine the cause of death.
More Human Cadaver in Lake Mead
The New York Post reported that the first body was found on May 1. It was then followed on May 7, while the third human remains were found on July 26. All of the three remains have yet to be identified.
The fourth corpse was found at Swim Beach in Nevada and is currently being reviewed by Clark County Coroner.
Meanwhile, a man living in Spain said he believes the second set of human remains unearthed earlier this summer belonged to his father.
Todd Kolod noted that he was three years old when his father Daniel drowned in Callville Bay in 1958, as reported by the Daily Mail. Kolod's father was on a speed boat with a friend when they hit a wake, causing both men to be thrown from the boat.
His father's remains were never recovered. The body involved was the one found on May 7, with a set of bones and missing teeth that seemed to align with a partial denture Daniel had. DNA samples had been taken.
The coroner said that the person may have been aged between 23 and 38 years old at the time of death.
Kolod's father was 22 when he drowned.
Lake Mead
A National Park Service spokesperson said in a CNN report that one possible explanation for the remains could be that people previously drowned at the lake when the water levels were still on the rise.
Lake Mead was the largest manmade reservoir in the country in the '80s. It was believed to be 1,225 feet above sea level. However, water levels on the reservoir have decreased this year due to the mega-drought that continues across the country.
NASA said that Lake Mead was filled to just 27 percent of capacity as of July 18.
On the other hand, the body found on May 1 was being investigated. The human remains had an obvious gunshot wound, and investigators immediately identified it as a homicide case.
Johansson noted that there was clearly somebody else involved "anytime you have a body in a barrel."
