An 89-year-old California grandma with dementia was killed by her family's pit bull that almost ate her alive.

According to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, the pit bull fatally mauled Joan Caffiel while she was being watched by her hired caregiver, Jelena Kelly, on Tuesday morning.

Kelly told KLAS she left the California grandma and the dog inside a bedroom and went to the kitchen, Crime Online reported. The caregiver noted that she heard a "strange noise" before returning to the bedroom and finding the pit bull mauling Caffiel.

Kelly said the dog had the California grandma by the neck as he dragged her body to another room. The caregiver noted that the pit bull was "pretty much eating her alive" at that point.

According to Caffiel's grandson, Peyton Faircloth, his grandma recently developed severe dementia and needed a full-time caregiver to assist her.

Caffiel's grandson was also there during the attack. But it was Kelly who reportedly called the police before 10 a.m. Faircloth said Kelly called him, and she was screaming.

"The caregiver was with my grandmother. She knows what happened, I don't know what happened," he told KVVU.

Caffiel's grandson said Buc, a rescue pit bull, has never been aggressive in the six years they had him. He noted that the dog was "very, very protective" of Caffiel.

However, a neighbor told KVVU that she was cautious around the pit bull, and its owners would have it outside unleashed.

The California grandma, who lived with her nephew and his son in the Pennwood Avenue home, was pronounced dead on the scene.

The pit bull was turned over to animal control after he was found at a nearby residence. However, KLAS reported that Joan Caffiel's family does not want the pit bull euthanized.

California Man Mauled to Death by Dogs

Late last month, a California man was mauled to death by a pack of dogs. According to CBS News, an individual was trying to separate the dogs from the 59-year-old victim when police arrived on the scene.

The California man, who was not identified, was administered first aid before he was taken to a hospital. However, the Selma Police Department said he later died.

The number of dogs and the type of breed that attacked the California man was not specified. The dogs reportedly escaped from a nearby residence and attacked the man while walking through the neighborhood.

The person who attempted to separate the dogs and the man was also bitten by one of the dogs. He suffered a minor injury. The dogs were captured and quarantined while the owner cooperated with authorities.

California Babysitter Saved Baby From Pit Bull

A father from Fresno, California praised his teenage babysitter for saving his infant son from a pit bull.

Independent reported that the 15-year-old babysitter was watching the man"s four-year-old and seven-year-old sons when a pit bull got loose and attacked the younger child, Carson, earlier this month.

Courtney Neal, the father, said the babysitter stayed with Carson, bravely fought off the dog, and yelled for help while holding on to the dog's collar.

The two children had been walking around the neighborhood with their babysitter when the pit bull allegedly became loose and attacked Carson, who has a fear of dogs.

The child was placed in an ICU unit. He reportedly needed stitches on his back and arm and two surgeries to repair his facial and jaw nerve damage.
