A Florida mail carrier was mauled to death by five dogs after her truck broke down along a road in Putnam County.

According to ABC News, the U.S. Postal Service mail carrier was a 61-year-old woman who died from injuries after a dog attack. Deputies of the Putnam County Sheriff's Office found the woman on the ground when they arrived at the scene in Interlachen Lake Estates on Sunday afternoon.

The County Sheriff's Office posted on its Facebook that the authorities found the dogs inside a fence at a nearby home. A nearby resident told deputies that they heard the woman screaming for help when they saw five dogs attacking her.

Authorities administered first aid to the woman, who was bleeding profusely. They applied tourniquets and waited for the rescue unit to arrive before they took the woman to a nearby hospital. She was flown to a trauma center in Gainesville.

Florida Mail Carrier Attacked by Five Dogs

The Florida mail carrier was identified as Pamela Jane Rock. The Putnam County Sheriff's Office noted that she was screaming for help while lying on the ground.

Several neighbors came in to help Rock by trying to pull the dogs off her. According to The New York Times, a neighbor even fired a rifle into the air as he tried to scare the dogs away.

A spokesman for the sheriff's office, Col. Joseph Wells, said in a news conference Tuesday that Rock went into cardiac arrest and died from her injuries.

In a statement, the U.S. Postal Service noted that it was "deeply saddened" to lose one of its employees. The Postal Service also extended its sympathy to Rock's family, sending its thoughts and prayers to her family and co-workers.

A neighbor of the dogs' owner told the Times that Rock would often place an apple next to residents' mail inside the mailboxes. According to Wells, the dogs were medium-sized mixed-breed "and mean," and they were taken by animal control to be euthanized at a later date.

Wells said the dog attack was still being investigated, and the owner of the dogs could possibly face charges. The sheriff's office did not release the name of the owner of the dogs.

Wells said that one neighbor told deputies that the dogs had previously been secured by having rocks at the bottom of a fence for a period of time.

The neighbor added that they did not suspect "anything like this" would occur. Another neighbor said the dogs, who can jump the fence "all the time," had caused occasional chaos in the neighborhood and once killed a Chihuahua.

Dog Attack in California

Late last month, a California man was mauled to death by a pack of dogs. According to CBS News, an individual was trying to separate the dogs from the 59-year-old victim when the police arrived on the scene.

The man, who was not identified, was taken to a hospital, where he later died. The number of dogs and the type of breed that attacked the man were not specified.

The dogs reportedly escaped from a nearby residence and attacked the man while walking through the neighborhood.

The dogs were captured and quarantined while the owner cooperated with authorities. According to nonprofit DogsBite.org, eight fatal dog attacks in 2020 "resulted in meaningful criminal charges."
