[VIDEO] Mexico Airplane Engine Explodes After Takeoff, Catches Fire in Scary Moment
Passengers and crew aboard a Viva Aerobus flight which just departed from Guadalajara International Airport experienced quite a scary moment when one of the plane's engines caught fire. That moment was captured on video by one of the passengers on a window seat, and that video was posted on the Flight Emergency Twitter page:
It was already at 13,000 feet in the air, on its way to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) when the engine failure happened for Viva Aerobus Flight VB518.
According to Fox Business, the engine caught fire just after takeoff. Passengers in the flight reportedly heard an explosion just 10 minutes into the flight, with some passengers reportedly screaming, while others were crying upon hearing that one of the engines was on fire.
Viva Aerobus Flight Able to Return to Guadalajara International Airport Safely
However, while the passengers were panicking, the pilot followed established safety protocols and was able to return to Guadalajara International Airport and land it safely after an emergency landing procedure, according to Simple Flying. All passengers and crew members on board were confirmed to be safe.
The airline released a comment, stating that the crew had control of the aircraft at all times and followed procedures established by manufacturers. In this case, the manufacturer of that plane was Airbus, as the model is an Airbus A320-200.
In a press release, the airline also stated that they regret any inconvenience the incident has caused and that the reason for circumstances that caused the engine failure is still being analyzed and evaluated. Viva Aerobus also announced that they are working together with Airbus and the company that built the engine, Pratt & Whitney, to investigate why this happened.
Passengers Angry With Viva Aerobus
The video clip was originally posted by Kimberlee García, who was quite vocal about cautioning other travelers not to fly with Viva Aerobus after her frightening flight, according to the Daily Mail.
On a social media post, she wrote that the way that the airline handled the situation was "disgusting" and that the passengers had no communication from any of the flight crew as her fellow passengers were panicking, thinking they were going to die. She ended her post by saying in all caps "DO NOT FLY THIS AIRLINE."
However, following the incident, Viva Aerobus provided a hotel room for the night for each of the passengers and then placed on a flight that departed Wednesday morning. The airline then stated that they reaffirm their commitment to safety in each of their flights, adding that safety is the company's number one priority.
However, this is already the second time that a Viva Aerobus was forced to perform an emergency landing in the last three months. The first incident happened on May 22, when a flight from Villahermosa to Mexico City was forced to do an emergency landing after a bird got sucked into the engine turbine.
