Authorities conducted a huge raid at Rikers Island, New York City largest jail complex after months of investigating drugs, weapons and contraband being transported into the jail.

On Monday, investigators with New York City's Department of Investigation (DOI) and the Department of Correction (DOC) examined around 75 locations in the prison, which included searches of inmates, cells, staff areas, and the guards, who were reportedly pulled over and patted down as they arrived at work.

According to a statement issued from DOC and DOI, the Monday afternoon sweep focused on the George Motchan Detention Center, an all-male facility that houses 2,000 inmates. All 100 correction officers in the center were also searched.

Correction officials said the raid was prompted after information was gathered during a probe of violence and other illegal behavior at the jail.

The "operation was necessitated by information" revealed by the ongoing investigation of Rikers Island, read the statement.

The New York Daily News reports that at least two guards were arrested on Monday. The guards, who have been identified as Devine Rahming and Steven Dominguez, have both admitted to smuggling contraband into the prison in the past and were caught with cocaine. They've been charged with drug possession.

Over a dozen officers have been arrested since the Rikers investigation began months ago and more charges are expected, the statement said.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio spoke out about the death of a mentally ill, homeless veteran who died earlier this year in an overheated jail cell on Rikers Island, calling the tragedy "very troubling."

Jerome Murdough, a 56-year-old former Marine, literally "baked to death" in a Rikers jail cell that reached at least 100 degrees on Feb. 15.

NYC officials said that Murdough was on anti-psychotic and anti-seizure medication, which may have contributed to why he died in the overheated cell. Although the cell had a small vent to let in cool air, Murdough reportedly did not open it. As a result, one of the officials, who remained anonymous, said Murdough "basically baked to death."
