SNAP Benefits October 2022 for New Mexico will be resuming with the New Mexico Services Department informing SNAP benefits recipients about the new developments.

Human Services Department's website noted that it will notify recipients directly by mail and electronically when it is time for them to renew and submit their applications to determine ongoing eligibility. SNAP recipients are encouraged to reply to those notices to ensure the continuity of their benefits.

Starting in October, SNAP benefits New Mexico recipients will once again have to renew their benefits and submit interim reports every six months. It would ensure that families receiving SNAP benefits in New Mexico still meet eligibility requirements.

The New Mexico Human Services Department deputy secretary, Angela Medrano, said that it is "imperative that SNAP customers" should be on the lookout for their communication regarding the important benefit requirements.

The HSD is also urging all SNAP benefits participants to ensure that they provide their new contact information if they have recently changed their contact details.

HSD said that qualified participants have several options to renew their SNAP applications such as using yes.state.nm.us or sending the signed applications by email to CASA, P.O. Box 830, Bernalillo, NM 87004.

They can also fax their application to 1-855-804-8960 or submit it in person at their local HSD Income Support office.

SNAP Benefits New Mexico

In 2021, 520,500 New Mexico residents received SNAP benefits. Almost 67% of SNAP participants are families with children, and 52% in working families.

SNAP participants in Mexico received $1.34 billion in 2021, according to Center on Budget and Policy Priorities. This budget also includes a temporary pandemic relief.

The average SNAP benefit for each household per month is worth $162 in 2022, excluding emergency allotments.

SNAP benefits are deposited into an Electronic Benefits Card monthly. It can be used to purchase food at one of about 254,000 authorized retail locations around the country, with some 1,600 of those found in New Mexico.

Households receiving SNAP benefits can expect to see an increase in their food stamp benefits on October 1.

SNAP will automatically increase to reflect changes in the cost of living with the rising inflation rates, as reported by Food Stamps Now.

SNAP recipients have been experiencing increased financial challenges due to the rising cost of food and grocery, which is a direct result of inflation.

Aside from individual recipients, food banks were also starting to feel the strain on resources again.

Elaine Waxman, a food insecurity expert at the Urban Institute, noted that the end of enhanced unemployment, stimulus check, and monthly child tax credit payments combined with inflation shows that problems are surfacing once again.

Households receiving SNAP benefits can expect to see an average of 12.5% increase in their benefits.

The maximum allotment of SNAP benefits for a family of four will increase between $1,182 and $1,189 in Alaska, while families of four in 48 states and D.C. will receive a maximum allotment of $399.
