The tennis world is in shock as Swiss legend Roger Federer announced his retirement last Thursday. In a span of just a few weeks, not only has Serena Williams retired but also Federer, causing a huge blow to the sport.

Tennis Great Roger Federer Is One of the Richest Athletes Alive Today
Born in 1981 in Basel, Switzerland, Roger Federer started playing tennis at a young age. When he reached eight, he joined the Basel junior tennis program.
Australian player Peter Carter saw potential in the youngster at the age of 10 and trained the young Federer for the next four years. At age 13, Federer accepted an invitation to attend Switzerland's national tennis training center.
When a new training center opened up a few years later, Federer reunited with Carter and helped guide him to become one of the most dominant tennis players in the history of the sport.
As a teen amateur, Federer won the Wimbledon junior singles and doubles titles and soon became the world's number one ranked ITF player. In 1999, he finally turned pro and garnered some huge, high-profile wins.
According to Distractify, Federer is a 20-time Grand Slam singles champion. These include eight Wimbledon championships, six Australian Open titles, and his impressive feat of winning the U.S. Open five times in a row.
His career also saw a big rivalry between him and Spaniard Rafael Nadal. This rivalry was considered one of the biggest rivalries in sport, along with the Lakers and the Celtics, Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier, and the Yankees and the Red Sox.
The two have battled some classic matches in some of the biggest tennis tournaments around the world. Unfortunately, with his retirement announcement, Federer will no longer be able to add to those accolades.
In his retirement announcement posted on social media, he said the last three years had presented challenges for his body in the form of injuries and surgeries. He said he had worked hard to return to competitive form but acknowledged that his body has limits, and the message it was sending him was already clear.
"I am 41 years old. I have played more than 1,500 matches over 24 years. Tennis has treated me more generously than I ever would have dreamt, and now I must recognize when it is time to end my competitive career," Federer said as he hung up his racket for good.
