On November 1, 2021, Joe Dobson, 19, went out to eat with some friends in the beach town of Playa del Carmen in Mexico.

The British teen had a fatal allergic reaction after eating a burrito that contained sesame, despite repeatedly asking the restaurant if his burrito contained sesame.

According to Yahoo News, the teen requested a vegetarian burrito and repeatedly questioned employees in Spanish and English if his burrito contained sesame. He has allergies to sesame, milk, eggs, and peanuts.

His friends said at the inquest that he recognized sesame in his food after three bites, but the restaurant staff seemed not to care and did not even call an ambulance.

When they returned to their apartment to use the EpiPen that the teen had left, it was already too late. He lost consciousness and later died in a hospital.

The British Teen Made It Clear to Mexico Restaurant Staff That He Is Allergic to Sesame

In a statement presented at South London Coroner's Court in Croydon, Dobson's friend Harriet Preston said Joe ordered a vegetarian burrito and said no sesame and used the Spanish word. When the food arrived, it was sent back as Joe believed it contained sesame.

"Joe tried to tell the staff at the restaurant in basic English that if he eats sesame, he will die," Preston recalled.

His friend recalled that when Joe's food returned, he held his torch light over, checking if there was any sesame.

Dobson took a bite and noticed that it had sesame. So, he went to the Mexico restaurant staff but denied it, although he could feel it in his throat.

Preston also stated that Dobson said he needed an ambulance, but the staff shrugged it off. Nobody in the restaurant treated the situation as an emergency, and no one knew at least basic first aid.

According to coroner Mark Taylor, a staff told Dobson to drink some lemon and honey juice "to keep them quiet," The Mail reported.

The coroner concluded that the British teen clearly did all he could reasonably do to inform the Mexico restaurant not to serve him food with sesame and even checked it himself.

He also said that the sesame in the food from the restaurant had caused the fatal allergic reaction.

Allergic Reaction Has Killed Many

Another British teen died last month after having a severe allergic reaction to a pina colada on the Costa del Sol in Spain, The Irish Sun noted.

The victim, Shiv Mistry, 18, thought he was drinking a cocktail made with typical coconut cream. However, the drink was made of dairy cream. He was allergic to dairy.

Last week, inquiries also revealed how dairy-allergic mother-of-five Celia Marsh experienced anaphylaxis on the ground shortly after eating a vegan wrap from a restaurant in London. The bread was contaminated by milk but labeled "dairy free."

Meanwhile, the Mexico restaurant that served burritos with sesame to a British teen has not been named.
