Los Angeles: Nury Martinez Steps Down as City Council President After Leaked Video Exposes Racist Remarks
Los Angeles City Council President Nury Martinez was caught saying racist remarks while in a conversation with two other council members. She has since apologized but has now announced her resignation from her position.
According to a report from Axios, Martinez asked her colleagues and the residents of Los Angeles for forgiveness. She also said that she hopes that people give her the opportunity to make amends as she resigned from her position as President of the Los Angeles City Council.
The Los Angeles City Councilwoman was caught on tape saying those racist remarks with Councilmembers Gil Cedillo, Kevin de Leon, and Los Angeles County Federation of Labor President Ron Herrera. The California and Los Angeles branches of the NAACP demanded their resignations.
The discussion between the council members was racist not only in their anti-black remarks but also had anti-Indigenous comments.
Nury Martinez Called White Council Member's Black Child "Little Monkey"
The leaked audio was first reported by the Los Angeles Times. It showed Martinez referring to white council member Mike Bonin's child, who is black, as "ese changuito," or that little monkey. This happened during a Martin Luther King Jr. Day parade ironically. She also referred to Bonin as a "little b---h."
Herrera also partook in the racist remarks and said that Bonin should put his black son out in public like a lawn jockey, which is a reference to the racist statues used to invoke the antebellum South.
The other officials who were in on that conversation all apologized, including Herrera and De Leon, who admitted their actions were inexcusable. However, Cedillo told the Los Angeles Times that he did not recall being part of this conversation.

Nury Martinez Also Attacked Other Latinos, Made Racist Remarks Against Oaxacans
According to NBC News, Martinez also dismissed Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascon, who is described as a justice reform advocate reviled by law-and-order politicians. She said "F--- that guy. He's with the Blacks."
While Gascon has become reviled by Republicans for his reforms, he also did not get some love from other members of the Democratic Party, as Martinez and the other officials she had that racist conversation with were all Latino Democrats.
She also made fun of the indigenous Oaxacan people who have migrated to Los Angeles. She referred to them as "short little dark people," and also called them ugly.
The comment did not sit too well with fellow Latinos, especially those of Oaxacan descent. This included Los Angles Oaxacan chef, restaurateur, and Gold Award recipient Bricia Lopez, who joined the calls for her resignation.
Bonin, a gay councilman, called on Martinez, De Leon, and Herrera to resign from their positions. He is joined by fellow City Council members Nithya Raman and Paul Koretz. Meanwhile, LA Mayor Eric Garcetti did not state whether any of these elected leaders should step down but did condemn their actions.
