Alex Jones Loses Another Court Battle vs. Sandy Hook Families, Ordered To Pay $965 Million
After losing an emotional court battle in Texas over his Sandy Hook massacre conspiracy theories last August, Alex Jones was back in court. This time, he was tried in Connecticut to face another Sandy Hook defamation lawsuit. The result was the same, as the conspiracy theorist also lost this case. However, he was ordered to pay even more than the Texas trial.
According to the BBC, the families of eight of the Sandy Hook victims, as well as one FBI agent who responded to the attack, sought at least $550 million in the Connecticut defamation trial against the Info Wars founder. The jury sided with them and ordered the right-wing radio host to pay $965 million, which is much more than what the plaintiffs were seeking.
Victims' Families Suffered Attacks From Alex Jones's Followers After He Called Sandy Hook Massacre a Hoax
In his Info Wars show, Jones stated that the school shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary was a hoax made up by the government to take away guns from people. He also claimed that the parents of the Sandy Hook victims were all "crisis actors."
While many would rebuff these claims as just another conspiracy theory from a notable conspiracy theorist, it spurred others into action, with many threatening the grieving families of victims with violence and harassing them constantly.
One of the parents, Mark Barden, who lost his 7-year-old son, Daniel, during the massacre, testified in court that followers of Jones urinated on his son's grave. He also stated that they also threatened to dig up his coffin. According to the Associated Press, he and his wife were awarded $86 million.
FBI Agent William Aldenberg, who is now retired, also sued Jones. He responded to the school shooting alongside law enforcement and was outraged when he saw online claims that he was an actor. He described the horrors he saw when he arrived at Sandy Hook Elementary School and was awarded $90 million.
Another relative who sued Jones was Erica Lafferty, the daughter of slain Sandy Hook principal Dawn Hochsprung. She testified that because of Jones's claims, people mailed rape threats to her house. She stated that "hate, lies, and conspiracy theories will follow both me and my family through the rest of our days."
Alex Jones Denounces Verdict During Info Wars
While the jury read their verdicts, Alex Jones was broadcasting in tandem with his Info Wars show and called the order to pay a total of $965 million in damages a "joke."
"Do these people actually think they're getting any money," he asked during his program. The New York Times then reported that immediately after this, he started fundraising. He told his viewers that the Democrats are out to get him and said, "your pennies counter their millions."
Jones also reportedly covered his top headlines with ads for his diet supplements, as well as appealed to his audience to buy his book. The New York Times also reported that he is planning to hold an "emergency" 15-hour broadcast to urge his followers to donate to his cause as he keeps on losing his legal battles.
Previously, Jones was ordered by the court to publicly announce that the Sandy Hook massacre did take place and that the parents and first responders were not crisis actors.
