Father Shocked to Learn Missing Son Charlie Bothuell V Was Found Alive in His Basement [Watch]
A story about a 12-year-old boy from Michigan, who was reportedly missing for 11 days, developed a new bizarre twist when officials found the boy alive in his parents' basement.
The boy, Charlie Bothuell V, lives with his father and stepmother in Detroit and was last seen on June 14 at his dad's home, the Detroit Free Press reported. Both police and the FBI said they searched the home several times and even brought in cadaver dogs.
However, on Wednesday, officers found Charlie crouching behind boxes and a plastic container, with food and bedding nearby while searching his home, according to The Associated Press.
"In 37 years of policing, I will tell you, I've never seen anything quite like this," Detroit Police Chief James Craig told the Free Press. "But the outcome, I couldn't be happier."
Apparently, HLN TV Host Nancy Grace was the first person to tell Charlie's father, Charlie Bothuell IV, that his son was found alive in his home during a live TV interview. Bothuell seemed to be in complete shock after hearing the news. Later on, he denounced accusations that he was secretly aware of his son's whereabouts.
"I didn't know he was in the basement," Bothuell told reporters at the scene. "I couldn't find him. I'm shocked, because I looked, the Detroit Police looked, the FBI looked. For anyone to imply that I knew he was in the basement is absurd, and it's wrong. I love my son. I'm glad that he's home, and he's going to have the great future that he deserves to have."
Bothuell agreed to take a FBI-administered polygraph test, which ABC affiliate WXYZ said he "failed miserably," according to inside sources.
The child's stepmother declined to take the polygraph test.
Charlie is currently being treated at a children's medical hospital.
