Mexico: 5 of the Scariest and Most Haunted Places in the North American Country
Mexico has just celebrated Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, which is a celebration of death and life.
In celebration of the said holiday and Halloween, let's look at five of the scariest and most haunted places in Mexico.
5 Most Haunted Places in Mexico
Mexico is an ancient land with a very bloody history, starting from the war-like Aztecs sacrificing their enemies to please the gods to the Spanish conquest, the Mexican Revolution, the Mexican-American war, and today's modern drug war. This bloody history has led to some pretty haunted places, and here are five of them.
Tasqueña Station
Tasqueña station of the Mexico City Metro system may seem like an ordinary train station to the thousands of commuters who use it daily, but it is known as one of the most haunted places in Mexico. Reports said there is much spiritual activity here, but it may not be as scary as the other places on this list.
According to Travel Triangle, this station is haunted by the ghost of an old man killed in the station while traveling on his own. However, this spirit is allegedly a benevolent one, protecting solo passengers. Still, it does not make this station any less haunted.
The House of Laments in Guanajuato
Before the term "serial killer" was even coined, Mexico already had its own serial killer at the turn of the 20th century, and his name was Don Tadeo Fulgencío Mejía.
Don Tadeo was a rich man. However, after the death of his wife during a home invasion, he reportedly consulted a witch who advised him to make ritual human sacrifices on his property, known today as the House of Laments or "Casa de Los lamentos."
According to Points and Travel, Don Tadeo often killed his victims to communicate with his dead wife. Now, the property in Guanajuato is a museum that preserves the story of his madness.
The La Moira House
Painted completely black, the La Moira House is said to be the "most haunted house in Mexico." According to Amy's Crypt, a disturbed young man named Marcus was haunted by strange disembodied voices and an apparition of a hanged man in one of the bedrooms in this Mexico City house.
After several years, the disturbed young man entered the same room he had seen the apparition of the man hanging. Marcus then proceeded to hang himself.
Templo Mayor Ruins
During the Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire, the last Aztec emperor, Cuauhtémoc, made his last stand in what is now the Templo Mayor ruins right in the heart of Mexico City.
The ruins were part of what was the Aztec capital of Tenochtitlan, and this used to be the site of ritual sacrifice for the Aztecs, with an estimated 4,000 people brutally killed to appease their gods. Now, shadowy figures are said to be seen not just in the ruins, but also in the nearby Aztec museum.
Doll Island
Doll Island is perhaps one of the creepiest places on Earth. It is an isolated island near the canals of Xochimilco, Mexico City.
Featured in countless haunted places videos and even visited by Anthony Bourdain, the island filled with creepy dolls has grown quite famous. It is reportedly much haunted, as visitors heard a little girl's voice whispering in their ears.
Doll Island is filled with dolls, from the floor to the buildings and trees. Many of these dolls were donated in order to appease the spirit of a little girl who drowned in the area.
