World Cup 2014 Groups, How to Watch, Schedule: Russia, Algeria Collide for Spot in Knockout Stages
Russia and Algeria will collide in all-important Group H game on Thursday with the winner likely progressing to the knockout stages of the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
Algeria, who is coming off a 4-2 win against South Korea after absorbing a 2-1 defeat in their tournament opener, need just a draw to advance to the last 16 of a World Cup for the first time in team history.
Algeria coach Vahid Halilhodzic, who is not expected to make any changes from his start XI during the South Korea match, vowed that they won't settle with a draw.
The veteran coach, who will once again pin his hopes on striker Islam Slimani, said that they will work hard to get three points to gain momentum heading into the next round.
"I don't think we are capable of seeking a draw, but of course a draw would be welcome if it happens. Sometimes to get a draw you have to score first," Halilhodzic said on Wednesday night. "At the start of this World Cup my team had nothing to lose but tomorrow we have something to lose. It's a moment to make history and to make history you have to do everything right."
Russia, on the other hand, will have bigger pressure on their shoulders as they can't settle for a draw. They need to win to have a realistic chance of getting into the knockout stages.
Russia, who will host the tournament in 2018, has only scored a goal in tournament, which came during their 1-1 draw against the South Koreans.
Russia coach Fabio Capello is familiar with the Algerian side, which he faced during the 2010 World Cup South Africa when he was still with England. He said that this year's Algerian squad is a better team, and he is hoping that they can take advantage of their attacking options on Thursday.
"It's a much quicker team and certainly much better organized. They are doing really well," Capello said of Algeria. "We've always played an attacking game and created chances in every match. We had chances but the truth is we didn't take them."
The match, which will be broadcast on ESPN2, will start at 4 p.m. EST. Fans can also watch through this link.
