Nancy Pelosi Says Democrats Urge Her for Another House Leadership Bid, Will Make Comments After Midterm Elections
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said that her fellow Democrats are urging her for another house leadership run.
Pelosi said that people are campaigning and that she is "not asking anyone for anything," adding that her fellow Democrats are asking her to consider it.
Democrats would have to win three-quarters of the seats to keep being the majority in the House.
Meanwhile, Kevin McCarthy has been working up the votes from his members to become a speaker. However, right-wing members of his conference are posing a threat to derail his candidacy for the House leadership.
Pelosi led the House Democratic caucus since 2003 and was widely expected to step down from her role next year to make way for a new generation of leaders after a term-limit agreement she made while she was pursuing the speakership after the 2018 midterm elections.
The Democratic party has to secure 218 out of the 435 total seats to control the House. Republicans have won 210 seats while Democrats have claimed 198 seats as of November 12, as reported by Business Insider.
As of now, the Democrats control the House with a 220-212 majority.
In January 2019, Republicans have lost control in the lower chamber when they did not get the majority after losing swats in the 2018 midterms.
Nancy Pelosi's Bid to Another House Leadership Term
Pelosi commented on her future role in House leadership, saying that she will not be making any comments until the midterm elections have reached their conclusion. The incumbent House Speaker said that they have "a little more time to go," adding that she wishes the "counting was faster."
Closest allies and aides do not know what Pelosi is going to do despite announcing years ago that she will be making way for new blood after 2022, according to a CNN report.
A senior Democratic aide said that everyone is "frozen by the situation."
One member said that Pelosi "is being so careful" not to reveal anything that even Stephen Hoyer and Jim Clyburn do not know what Pelosi's plans are.
Pelosi's spokesperson, Drew Hammil, said that the House speaker will make an announcement when the time comes. Hammil added to enjoy watching McCarthy "lose a speakership" the Republicans have not even won in the first place.
Nancy Pelosi Retirement Decisions
Pelosi said at the time that her decision will be affected by "what happened the last week or two," referring to her husband's assault inside their own home. The House speaker made the statement during her first sit-down interview since their San Francisco home invasion.
It was not the first time that Pelosi referred to stepping down from her position. Pelosi promised in 2018 that she would be giving up the speakership at the end of her term. However, some Democrats believe that she may hold on to her position if the party retains the control it has in the lower chamber.
