Donald Trump Officially Launches 2024 Presidential Run, Says 'Joe Biden Has Been a Time of Pain, Hardship, Anxiety and Despair'
Former President Donald Trump has officially launched his 2024 presidential run as he announced his campaign to reclaim the Oval Office at Mar-a-Lago resort on Tuesday night
Trump made the announcement following the loss of his hand-picked Republican candidates in the midterm elections. Speaking from the ballroom of his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida, the former president said:,"America's comeback starts right now," NBC reported.
He noted that they have always known that "this was not the end." Trump said he was announcing his candidacy for president of the United States to "make America great and glorious again."
Trump claimed that when he left office, the "United States stood ready for its golden age," and "was at the pinnacle of power, prosperity and prestige." He added that the U.S. was "towering above all rivals... and striding into the future, confident and so strong in four short years."
Trump went on to say that his White House exit in January 2021 had made the United States "a nation in decline" that could only be rescued by returning him to the Oval Office, Independent reported.
He noted that "all the incoming administration had to do was just sit back and watch... but now we are... a failing nation. For millions of Americans, the past two years under Joe Biden has been a time of pain, hardship, anxiety and despair."
Trump added that "Joe Biden is the face of left-wing failure and Washington corruption... I will ensure that Joe Biden does not receive four more years... our country could not take that."
Republicans on Donald Trump Presidential Run Announcement at Mar-a-Lago
Donald Trump's announcement for another presidential bid comes amid the Republican Party infighting after a lackluster performance in the midterms. It was earlier predicted that there would be a "red wave" in midterm elections. However, it did not materialize in the results of the polls.
Republican Senator Josh Hawley said the Republican party "as we know, is dead." He added that they have got to build something better, "something new." Hawley noted that they need to have a "discussion about going forward who's going to be the nominee."
John Cornyn, another Republican senator, said that "anybody can run." Cornyn noted that he does not expect that Trump will be the only one who will run for president in 2024, adding that he will support the Republican nominee.
However, the Texas Republican senator said he does not know that it will be Trump. Ted Cruz, another Republican senator from Texas, noted that if Trump is the nominee, he "would enthusiastically support him."
"But I also think if he chooses to run, there's going to be a process... [and] a debate. We'll see what happens," he added.
Dozens of Trump's handpicked candidates have lost their election bids on November 8, including the governor and senator in key battleground states such as Arizona and Pennsylvania.
Donald Trump Legal Cases
Donald Trump also announced his intention to run amid the ongoing cases against him, with Justice Department pursuing two investigations against him.
It is unclear whether the Department of Justice will officially file charges against him for his actions before January 6, 2021 and the seized Mar-a-Lago documents after he kept sensitive government documents.
The New York Times reported that Trump's announcement is "likely to have a minimal effect" on the investigations in the short term. The Justice Department is still waiting for an independent arbiter to rule on Trump's privilege claims.
Donald Trump is also facing a tax fraud case brought by the Manhattan district attorney's office last year that could reportedly undermine the foundation of his family's wealth.
