Three dead bodies with torture marks were washed ashore at two beaches in Mexico's resort city of Acapulco over the weekend, shocking many beachgoers.

The first and second bodies washed up on the shores of Condesa Beach were reported around noon on Saturday. According to Daily Mail, the bodies of two men were found by sunbathers enjoying the beach.

One of the bodies was reportedly strapped to a cement anchor on one hand and one foot, while the other body was lying face down in the sand. The two bodies reportedly bore torture marks. The third body was washed ashore at Icacos Beach on Sunday morning. 

Acapulco police said the man was shot before his body was dumped in the ocean. According to Fox News, the Mexican military was called to the scene since a military base was close to Icacos Beach. But despite the presence of the soldiers, tourists remained at the crime scene as the two beaches remained open.

Acapulco Remains One of Mexico's Deadliest Cities

Acapulco is currently one of the deadliest cities in Mexico, with Mexican drug cartels battling for control of the city, affecting its tourism industry. It has become so dangerous in Acapulco that the U.S. State Department warned Americans to avoid traveling to the resort city last October.

"Crime and violence are widespread," the State Department said. It added that armed groups are operating independently in the city and many other areas in Guerrero state, where Acapulco is located.

The State Department also warned that these armed groups may use violence toward travelers. As of August, the city has registered 110.5 homicides per 100,000 people.

According to a 2021 Statista data, it was second in the world in terms of homicide, just behind Mexico's city of Tijuana. In the first nine months of 2022, Acapulco registered more than 300 homicides. Mexico reported 33,308 killings in 2021, 34,554 in 2020 and 34,690 murders in 2019.

Independent Cartel of Acapulco Operates in the City

Mexico's Guerrero state is plagued by Mexican drug cartels dedicated to drug trafficking and extortion. The Independent Cartel of Acapulco is one of the drug cartels operating in the Mexican city of Acapulco in Guerrero.

The said cartel is reportedly fighting the Jalisco Cartel for control of the Port of Acapulco and other points in the state. Acapulco is known as a key entryway for South American cocaine, making the city an attractive piece of real estate for drug cartels.

According to Insight Crime, the Independent Cartel of Acapulco or Cartel Independiente de Acapulco (CIDA) is part of a wave of smaller local gangs in Acapulco that have emerged after officials dismantled larger criminal groups.

Founded in 2010, the cartel was formed as a result of Mexico's war on the Beltran Leyva cartel, which controlled the city. At the time, many of the cartel's top leaders were arrested and killed, and its drug shipments were interrupted, paving the way for the smaller and more agile Acapulco cartel to be formed.

Early this year, Mexican authorities arrested one of the founders of the Independent Cartel of Acapulco.

Abdner Noe "N," alias "El Traumado ," was arrested in the city of Tonala in Jalisco state. El Traumado was accused of being an alleged murderer and generator of violence in Guerrero state.
