The state of Texas was granted $485 million in TANF payments in 2020, with an additional $58 million from the TANF Contingency Fund.

The state then spent 5% of these funds on basic assistance, mainly as cash assistance to Temporary Assistance for Needy Families. It ranked 50th among the states and Washington, D.C. for percent of TANF funds that were funneled to pay for basic assistance.

Child Welfare was the most funded by TANF spending in Texas by 2020.

TANF block grant was created through the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996 as part of a federal effort to "end welfare as we know it."

At least 15 states have spent 10% or less of their allotted TANF budget on basic assistance. Some of the funds have also been used to fund programs and services such as child care that encourage and support employment among low-income families.

A huge part of the funds is used neither to meet families' ongoing basic needs nor to support work in 2020.

TANF Benefits Texas

Monthly cash payments for TANF families help pay for food, clothing, housing, utilities, furniture, transportation, phone, laundry, supplies for the home, medical supplies not covered by Medicaid, and other basic needs.

TANF benefits in Texas can be given to families with children age 18 and younger. The state determines that a family can be parents or relatives caring for related children.

TANF benefits can help families with have little to no money or don't have a way to get money.

To be eligible for TANF benefits in Texas, officials look at the amount of money the family has, the value of things the family is paying for or currently owns, and the amount of money paid for child care and child support.

There is a maximum monthly income limit, with a family size of one in Texas at $64 for child-only cases, while a home with one parent or one caretaker is at $78.

If you are a grandparent or an adult caring for a related child, you might be able to get TANF even if your income is higher than the income limits.

There is also a one-time TANF so families can pay for their basic needs even when in crisis. It is usually given to a family only once a year.

A crisis can be losing a job, losing a home, or a medical emergency.

TANF Payments

TANF payments aim to accomplish four goals with its implementation such as providing assistance to needy families so children can be cared for in their own homes or in the homes of relatives; end the dependency of needy parents on government benefits through job preparation, work, and marriage.

It also targets to prevent and reduce out-of-wedlock pregnancies while establishing numerical goals every year as a response to these efforts and to encourage the maintenance and formation of two-parent families.

The states decide on the design of the program, the type, and the number of assistance payments. They are also the ones determining the eligibility rules for applicants.
