Donald Trump Walks Back His Call to 'Terminate' Constitution, Blames 'Fake News' Media for Misinterpreting His Truth Social Post
Former President Donald Trump is now walking back on his Truth Social statement, saying he does not want to "terminate" the Constitution.
On Monday, Trump slammed the "fake news" media for publishing his comments over the weekend after receiving a degree of bipartisan condemnation, even evoking a scathing rebuke from the White House, Daily Mail reported.
"The Fake News is actually trying to convince the American People that I said I wanted to 'terminate' the Constitution. This is simply more DISINFORMATION & LIES, just like RUSSIA, RUSSIA, RUSSIA, and all of their other HOAXES & SCAMS," Trump wrote on Truth Social.
"What I said was that when there is "MASSIVE & WIDESPREAD FRAUD & DECEPTION," as has been irrefutably proven in the 2020 Presidential Election, steps must be immediately taken to RIGHT THE WRONG," he added.
In a separate post, Trump insisted that the 2020 election must be redone, or he should still be declared the "rightful winner" of the election.
He wrote in all capital letters that "if an election is irrefutably fraudulent, it should go to the rightful winner or, at a minimum, be redone. Where open and blatant fraud is involved, there should be no time limit for change!"
"We want people who 'legitimately' won the election to lead our country, not people who had to cheat in order to win!!!' he concluded.
Donald Trump Calls for 'Termination' of Constitution in Truth Social Post
Donald Trump made the controversial post on his Truth Social account on Saturday when he called for the termination of the Constitution to overturn the 2020 election.
In his post, Trump said: "Do you throw the Presidential Election Results of 2020 OUT and declare the RIGHTFUL WINNER, or do you have a NEW ELECTION? A Massive Fraud of this type and magnitude allows for the termination of all rules, regulations, and articles, even those found in the Constitution."
He added that even "our great founders" did not want, and "would not condone, False & Fraudulent Elections!" Aside from repeating his false claim that he won the 2020 presidential election, he also accused the "Big Tech Companies" of conspiring against him with the Democratic Party.
Trump's post went up after Twitter's new owner Elon Musk unveiled internal documents showing how the company decided to limit the spread of a 2020 story about Hunter Biden's laptop from the social media platform. The story, censored weeks before the 2020 presidential election, was initially published by the New York Post.
Donald Trump's Call for 'Termination' of Constitution in Truth Social Post Draws Rebukes
Donald Trump's comments drew pushback not only from officials in the Democratic Party but also from his own Republican Party, such as former Vice President Mike Pence.
Pence said on a South Carolina radio show on Monday morning that everyone who serves in public office or aspires to serve or serve again must support and defend the Constitution.
The White House also responded to Donald Trump's Truth Social posting, with its spokesperson, Andrew Bates, saying that attacking the Constitution and all the document stands for is "anathema to the soul of our nation."
Bates noted that such act must be "universally condemned. He said the Constitution is a "sacrosanct document," which brings the American people together.
Bates then called out Trump and said he "cannot only love America when you win." Al Jazeera's correspondent Heidi Zhou-Castro said Trump's post was "extraordinary" as presidents take an oath of office to protect the Constitution.
In a statement, Republican Senator Mike Rounds said anyone who desires to lead the country must commit to protecting the Constitution and should not threaten to terminate it.
Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski further noted that suggesting the termination of the Constitution "is not only a betrayal of our Oath of Office," but also "an affront to our Republic."
Even Elon Musk joined in criticizing Trump's statements about revoking portions of the Constitution, tweeting Sunday: "The Constitution is greater than any President. End of story."
Donald Trump has since claimed that the 2020 presidential election was stolen from him and that Hunter Biden conspired with his father over his business dealings. However, there is no proof of either.
