The final report of the House January 6 committee urged Congress to ban former President Donald Trump from ever holding public office again.

In its 845-page report released Thursday night, the panel reportedly accused Trump of a criminal conspiracy to overturn the 2020 presidential election results.

According to Daily Mail, the final report detailed 200 acts in which Trump and his aides tried to pressure officials into reversing state results.

The report noted that Trump was the primary catalyst of the January 6 riot and that Congress should consider establishing a mechanism to ensure the former president can never hold power again.

"The central cause of January 6th was one man, former President Donald Trump, who many others followed... None of the events of January 6th would have happened without him," the report said."

It concluded that "the Committee believes that those who took an oath to protect and defend the Constitution and then, on January 6th, engaged ininsurrection can appropriately be disqualified and barred from holding government office - whether federal or state, civilian or military."

Most of the information in the report was already made public.

Donald Trump Dismissed the Findings of the January 6 Committee

Donald Trump quickly dismissed the findings of the January 6 committee as a "witch hunt." Before the committee came out with its final report, the panel interviewed more than 1,000 witnesses, conducted 10 hearings, and acquired millions of documents.

Trump tried to shift blame by reiterating that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi previously ignored his recommendation for troops to be used in Washington, D.C. However, fact checkers have repeatedly rejected this claim.

The former president wrote on his Truth Social platform: "The highly partisan Unselect Committee Report purposely fails to mention the failure of Pelosi to heed my recommendation for troops to be used in D.C., show the 'Peacefully and Patrioticly' words I used, or study the reason for the protest, Election Fraud."

On Monday, the January 6 panel referred four criminal charges to the Justice Department. The committee recommended that prosecutors pursue a criminal insurrection charge, as well as charges for obstructing an official proceeding and conspiracy to defraud the United States.

While the January 6 panel spent two years investigating the events of and leading to the Capitol insurrection, they do not have any legal power to charge Trump.

They can only refer their findings to the DOJ, which would be the one to file charges against the former president for his crimes. However, there is no guarantee that the Justice Department will decide to file charges.

The panel held its final public hearing in October with a subpoena for Trump. However, Trump avoided testifying and providing any requested documentation by suing. He also declined to show up for his deposition.

Donald Trump Announces Another Presidential Bid

Last month, Donald Trump announced that he will run again for president in 2024 and seek the Republican presidential nomination.

Trump said he was announcing his candidacy for president to "make America great and glorious again." The former president noted that it will not be his campaign alone but "will be our campaign all together."

Trump's announcement for another presidential bid comes amid the Republican Party infighting after a lackluster performance in the midterms. Republicans failed to secure a Senate majority but narrowly won control of the House.

It was earlier predicted that there would be a "red wave" in midterm elections. However, it did not materialize in the results of the polls.

Donald Trump has already filed the basic paperwork to become a presidential candidate in 2024. The former president filed his paperwork with the Federal Election Commission on November 15.
