Kevin McCarthy Loses House Speakership Vote for Third Straight Time; House Adjourns Without New Speaker
The race for House Speakership has been placed on hold for the moment, as the House of Representatives adjourned without a House Speaker elected. The House held three straight votes to elect a speaker during the session, with Kevin McCarthy failing to win all three times.
However, Politico noted that the California Republican Representative managed to have his opposition chip away during that third vote, and this was bad news for him as he only had a threadbare majority in the first vote, to begin with.
McCarthy is facing stiff opposition from the far right, with Ohio Republican Jim Jordan getting much support from a big part of the pro-Trump faction of the Republican party.
McCarthy may have struck out after three votes, but he is not giving up on the Speaker's Gavel just yet. A senior GOP source loyal to McCarthy told CNN, "We're going to war," and added that they are "Never backing down."
Republicans Now Hope to Resolve House Speaker Battle Privately
It had been a humiliating time for McCarthy and his allies, as the House failed to elect a House Speaker. Now, the pro-McCarthy side has begun talking with 20 defectors to break through and get the House Speakership when Congress resumes on Wednesday.
Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas), who is one of the 20 Republicans who voted against McCarthy, stated that they are having more conversations about what will be happening next, He did not say if the dissenters will be meeting among themselves, but he did admit he and others would be talking to members "across the conference."
It is still unclear if McCarthy would still be the one who needs to seek votes after one of his supporters, Rep. Byron Donalds (R-Fla.) flipped on the third ballot and voted for the Pro-Trump Jordan.
The Republicans opposing McCarthy are digging in and urging him to drop out. Rep. Bob Good (R-Va.) told Politico, "I think it's going to be increasingly clear that he's not going to be Speaker. We will never cave."
House Speaker Vote Lays Bare the Republican Divide
According to the Associated Press, for McCarthy to win the House Speakership, he would need 218 votes if no representative was absent at the time of the vote. However, the GOP only has a slim majority in the House, and he only received 203 votes in the first and second voting, and then only 202 in the third after Donalds flipped.
This showed that there was indeed a divide in the Republican Party, as those supporting Jim Jordan refused to back down, even flipping one of McCarthy's supporters.
The Pro-Jordan Republicans are now deepening the divide among House Republicans, with the far-right House Freedom Caucus leading the opposition to McCarthy's ascension into the Speakership Gavel.
The divide deepened when the so-called "Red Wave" failed to materialize, allowing McCarthy's critics within the Republican Party to make demands. McCarthy did reportedly concede to some of those demands, but it was not enough.
As for the Democrats, they do not seem to be interested in intervening in the fight between the Republicans that has brought the House to a standstill. Currently, they could make a deal with a few Republicans and elect a more centrist or moderate Republican as House Speaker, but CNN noted that they are not doing so at the moment.
