Transformers 4 'Age of Extinction' Trailer, Cast and Plot: Critics Give Mark Walberg and Robot Crew Low Ratings [Video]
The fourth installment of Michael Bay's mega-franchise "Transformers" came out this week with 165 minutes of pure action, robotics and, of course, lots of explosions.
"Transformers: Age of Extinction" takes place four years after the final battle between Optimus Prime with the Autobots and the Decepticons. This time, however, the movie features an all-new cast with the same robots but different humans. While the first three "Tranformers" movies revolved around the story of Sam Witwicky portrayed by Shia LaBeouf, the fourth film is starred in by Mark Wahlberg, who plays Cade Yeager, a single father and at the same time a struggling inventor. New robots are featured as well, and the Transformers will be joined by dinosaur robots, aptly named the Dinobots.
After the final battle left the city in ruins and claimed the lives of thousands of civilians, the U.S. government severed its connection with the Autobots, classifying them as fugitives. Furthermore, "Cemetery Wind," an elite CIA unit was formed with the mission of hunting down and eliminating any and all surviving Autobots. The team is aided by the bounty hunter Transformer known as Lockdown. Meanwhile, the Kinetic Solutions Incorporated (KSI) group led by business tycoon Joshua Joyce discovers "Transformium," the lifeblood of the Transfomers. He uses this to create a Transformer called Galvatron, whose data comes from Megatron's severed head.
Critical reception has mostly been negative, receiving only an 17 percent rating from online movie review website Rotten Tomatoes. Metacritic was a little more forgiving with a 32 out of 100 rating, despite generally unfavorable reviews overall. They do, however, understand that the film was created for the fans and not for critics. Reviews made by fans gave relatively more positive responses.
While the "Transformers" franchise has started to decline in terms of overall movie quality, the fifth and sixth installments are already being planned with the next release possibly in 2017.
