Universal Parks & Resorts, which is responsible for some of the biggest theme parks in the world, like Universal Studios Florida, has announced that they are building a family-focused theme park and resort hotel in Texas. They also revealed a year-round horror experience in Las Vegas.

According to NBC Dallas Fort Wort, Frisco Mayor Jeff Cheney confirmed Wednesday that the entertainment giant is planning to build a theme park and hotel within the area. He said it would be made to appeal to families with young children.

Universal Parks & Resort, which is the theme park unit of NBCUniversal, purchased 97 acres of land in North Texas for the upcoming family theme park. It will be located east of the Dallas North Tollway, north of Panther Creek Parkway.

Universal's New Theme Park in Texas Promises to be 'One-of-a-Kind'

Specifics about this theme park have yet to be discussed, but officials are describing that it will have traditional theme parks fare such as rides, shows, and food.

Guests will also be able to meet and greet characters from Universal properties, including movies like Despicable Me and Shrek.

Universal Parks & Resorts told Travel + Leisure on Wednesday that the theme park will be "set in a lush green landscape" and will feature "immersive themed lands."

Universal Parks & Resorts is very confident of this new venture in North Texas, with the company's president of New Ventures, Page Thompson, saying that the area is a perfect place to launch this new family-oriented theme park.

Thompson added that the theme park will be "full of family-friendly attractions, interactive and playful shows, character meets and greets unique merchandise, and fun food and beverage venues."

However, the company did admit that this new theme park would be scaled down compared to its other traditional theme park. But it promised to have the same quality as the other larger Universal Studios resorts.

Travel + Leisure reported that it will be a part of the increasing trend in the theme park industry known as "micro-parks."

These are smaller than larger theme parks like Disneyland and Universal Studios Florida, which are more affordable and designed to be experienced in a short period of time.

Universal Also Plans to Open a New Horror Experience in Las Vegas

Universal Parks & Resorts is not just investing in North Texas but also in Nevada. The company announced a new permanent entertainment experience in Las Vegas City.

Universal Studios has been known to be responsible for a boom in horror movies, releasing classic horror films from the 1930s to the 1950s.

They even have a movie monster franchise called the Universal Classic Monsters, including Dracula, Frankenstein, the Wolfman, and the Creature from the Black Lagoon.

According to the Associated Press, this new horror experience plans to bring these monsters to life inside a 110,000-square-foot space.

It will be an anchor tenant in Las Vegas' AREA15 entertainment district, which opened in 2020. So far, no timeline has been announced for the park's construction and opening.
