Michigan Wolverines co-offensive coordinator Matt Weiss has been placed on leave amid a probe by the University of Michigan police into a "report of computer access crimes."

In a statement to ESPN on Tuesday night, the University of Michigan Police Department (UMPD) said the "computer access crimes" occurred at the team's football facility Schembechler Hall between December 21 and 23. No other details have been released.

According to CBS Sports, a January 5 report about "fraudulent activity involving someone accessing university emails accounts without authorization" can be seen in the university's Daily Crime & Fire Log references. However, Weiss was not specifically named.

Since his suspension, Weiss has been banned from all team and recruiting events and the team's facilities. According to a police spokesman, the probe is still active. On December 31, 2022, Weiss coached Michigan in the Fiesta Bowl versus TCU.

"I am aware of the ongoing investigation by the University of Michigan Police Department and fully cooperating with investigators," Weiss said in a statement to ESPN, adding that he hopes everything gets sorted out soon.

He then declined to comment further "out of respect for the integrity of the investigation." Weiss spent the 2021 season as a quarterback coach under Jim Harbaugh.

After offensive coordinator Josh Gattis left the team last year, Weiss and offensive line coach Sherrone Moore were promoted to co-offensive coordinators.

Despite the change in the said post, the Michigan Wolverines earned a second straight Big Ten Championship and a top-two spot in the College Football Playoff.

Matt Weiss Investigation

Matt Weiss' neighbor in Ann Arbor, Michigan, who requested anonymity, told ESPN last week that they saw what seemed to be a police presence consisting of multiple unmarked cars parked outside of his house at the 2000 block of Norway Road.

According to sources, the January 10 search of Weiss' residence was related to the investigation being conducted by university police. Weiss, 39, earned a degree in economics, human and organizational development from Vanderbilt in 2005.

He also attended Stanford University and earned a master's degree in liberal studies. The two seasons that Weiss has been an assistant coach at Michigan have concluded with the Wolverines appearing in the College Football Playoff.

When he joined the Michigan Wolverines' staff as quarterbacks coach in 2021, the team went from 2-4 to 12-2. Weiss' deal includes a base pay of $850,000 for the 2022 season when he was promoted to co-offensive coordinator.

He was expected to bring the total to about $1.25 million with bonuses, roughly twice the $600,000 he earned during his first season in 2021.

Matt Weiss' Future in Ann Arbor

Matt Weiss was hired in March 2021, and his initial contract was for two years. He will need a new contract if he intends to remain in Ann Arbor.

Since his arrival, he has done a great job with the quarterbacks, and it is reasonable to assume that Jim Harbaugh would want him back, Maize N Brew reported. However, the Michigan Wolverines may look elsewhere to coach the quarterbacks if this incident becomes serious.

That person could be anyone like Kirk Campbell, who has been an analyst at Michigan for the past year and an offensive coordinator at Old Dominion, or David Shaw, who recently resigned as Stanford's head coach and has a history with Harbaugh.
