Bungie Destiny Game Beta and Release Dates for PS3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One: First Look at Latest Gameplay From 'Halo' Developer [Video]
The beta of video game "Destiny," by game maker Bungie, is set to be released on PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 on July 17, but the Xbox 360 and Xbox One versions will come out in "late July," according to Videogamer.
The first-person shooter (FPS) game was demonstrated at E3 2014. It spurred excitement in gamers, shooter fans and players of Bungie franchise "Halo" alike. The Destiny beta is initially limited to PlayStation systems because of a deal between Activision and Sony that gave the gaming console and its owners exclusive weapons, armors, vehicles and missions, as well as early beta access. However, reports have now confirmed that the game will also be available on Xbox, though no release date has been given. The game will be available across all platforms except PC by Sept. 9, suggesting the game could take a week or longer to be released for other consoles.
According to Bungie, most activities and modes from the full game can be played in the beta. Nonetheless, it remains unclear whether the player can retain progress from beta over to the full version. Some gamers might prefer not, since beta players would otherwise enjoy an early advantage when the game was publicly released. On the other hand, beta players might not like the idea of wasting efforts if they start with a clean slate on the full launch.
Destiny is set in a post-apocalyptic world 700 years into the future, in a world of technological advancement and peace known as the "Golden Age." Humans have spread out across the solar system and colonized the planets. But they witness a mysterious dissolution of the colonies, and man is on the brink of extinction. The player goes on a mission to save the human race from being wiped out.
Bungie is confident the game will run smoothly when it is launched.
