Elon Musk 'Alters' Twitter Feed Algorithm To Make His Tweets More Popular
Several Twitter users noticed that their "For You" Twitter feed has been full of tweets and replies from the platform CEO and billionaire, Elon Musk, with some even several days old.
The Verge reported that one of their correspondents counted five at the very top of their feed, with many more sprinkled between tweets from other users.
Internal data indicated that Musk's account rose to peak popularity in search rankings in April 2022. However, that engagement has then dropped significantly.
The Twitter CEO has earlier complained that his tweets were not getting enough views and even fired a Twitter engineer over it.
Engineers then checked the matter and found no issue with Twitter's feed algorithm.
Musk then launched a response to fix the "visibility" issue. He stated that 95% of his tweets were not getting delivered.
Users also complained about the same issue, saying that the top tweets on their timelines were nearly all from Musk despite not having interacted with Musk on their accounts.
Upon launching the views and impressions feature on Twitter, Musk was reportedly disappointed with how little his tweets got.
Mario Nawfal, a well-known name in the crypto industry, tweeted in a series of tweets that Musk said it was "ridiculous."
The Tesla CEO added that he has more than "100 million followers," and only getting "thousands of impressions."
Fixing Twitter Feed Algorithm
The Twitter CEO effectively confirmed that they are aware of the matter and tweeted, "please stay tuned," while they make changes in the Twitter feed algorithm.
He also noted during a meeting with Twitter engineers that the "Recommendation" algorithm was not working perfectly, which caused accounts with many followers "to be dumped," according to CNET.
It was not clear why Musk's tweets were being propelled to users' timelines, and Twitter representatives have yet to comment on the matter.
There were other issues on Twitter, such as users experiencing losing access to direct messages, getting error messages, and needing to schedule tweets to post them.
Twitter also announced that it planned to start charging $100 a month for a basic tier to access the platform.
Twitter also rolled out the 4,000 characters to tweet for U.S. Twitter Blue subscribers.
Usually, Twitter users can tweet using 280 characters.
Elon Musk Changing Twitter
Some of the changes Musk implemented in Twitter was the paid verification feature, wherein users will be able to get a blue checkmark verification for $8 per month.
He also reinstated the accounts of some people who have been banned or suspended from Twitter, such as former U.S. President Donald Trump.
Twitter has also banned links to other social media apps under the Tesla CEO for a short time. It was reverted after the platform faced huge scrutiny on the move.
Musk has also taken action on any Twitter account that shares live location info to avoid possible harm.
Sharing live location information of any kind is already not allowed on the platform.
