An Argentine model was found dead inside an apartment in Mexico's popular resort town of Playa del Carmen with bruises on her body and her hands tied.

The Argentine model was identified as 31-year-old Agostina Jalabert, whose body was discovered by her sister hanging by a belt from the towel rack in the bathroom on February 18.

According to the Daily Mail, initial investigation findings from the Quintana Roo State Attorney General's Office said Jalabert had committed suicide. However, the Argentine model's family disagreed with this finding.

Jalabert's family lawyer Betina Teuly had reviewed the autopsy and been in contact with Argentina's Foreign Ministry to pressure authorities in Mexico to reclassify the case as a femicide.

The model's father, Edgardo Jalabert, told the news network TN in Argentina that their lawyer said the autopsy showed that this was a femicide because of his daughter's injuries.

Police had also reportedly visited the apartment twice after neighbors reported screams coming from the home hours before Jalabert was discovered dead.

Argentine Model May Have Been Murdered By Her Boyfriend

Betina Teuly noted that while they did not want to interfere with the investigation, Agostina Jalabert's boyfriend, Juan Reverter, may have killed the Argentine model, adding that "there is sufficient evidence" to prove it.

Edgardo Jalabert has also spoken with Argentina's ambassador to Mexico, Carlos Tomada, who told him that the prosecutor's office was looking into the investigation to make sure that it was not a suicide. 

The father noted that his daughter broke up with Reverter in June 2021 but got back with him in December 2022, which ended up with Reverter moving in with Jalabert after visiting her for Christmas.

According to Infobae, the model lived in the Playa del Carmen apartment with her sister, Candela Jalabert, and Reverter. Her sister revealed that Reverter, also from Argentina, recently got back with her sister. 

She said he followed her to Mexico, where Jalabert relocated to pursue better opportunities in modeling. According to Candela, she last saw her sister alive on February 17.

Candela said she returned to the apartment the next morning and started banging on the door when the security code she entered at the door was rejected. Reverter eventually opened the door and claimed that Jalabert was sleeping.

However, her sister's dog guided Candela to the bathroom, where she found her sister sitting in the bathtub with a towel wrapped around her hands, Daily Mail reported.

Edgardo noted Candela found her sister "hanging from the towel rack, sitting or semi-sitting" in the bathtub. The towel rack was reportedly about four feet from the floor.

"It's hard to think that a person can hang from a height lower than their own height," Jalabert's uncle, German Jalabert, told Pagina 12.

After his girlfriend was found dead, Reverter reportedly vanished and is nowhere to be found. That is why the family accused him of murdering the Argentine model.

Who Is Argentine Model Agostina Jalabert?

According to Pagina 12, Agostina Jalabert, the eldest of three sisters, hails from Carmen de Patagones, part of Buenos Aires. She moved to Mexico last year to pursue her modeling career.

"Agostina was not depressed, she had rebuilt her life in Mexico and her job was going well," said Jalabert's family. The family asked for the intervention of Argentina's government as they believed that the investigation process initiated by authorities in Mexico was filled with flaws.

"None of the basic protocols were applied to investigate and find out the real causes of his death... The boyfriend was not arrested, his phone was not seized, nor were toxicological tests carried out, nor was it verified if he had any injuries," said German Jalabert, a former provincial Minister of Tourism.

According to the family's lawyer, Reverter had scratches on his face when the Argentine model was found dead. The family thinks he may be in Canada, where he once lived, or in Asia or San Francisco in the United States.
