Colorado Student Who Shot 2 Administrators at East High School Still on the Loose
A 17-year-old Colorado student shot two school administrators at East High School in Denver on Wednesday morning.
One victim underwent surgery that afternoon, while the other was already in stable condition at a nearby hospital, NPR reported.
According to Colorado Public Radio/Denverite, no one else was hurt. It has been reported that student Austin Lyle has yet to be located, but his vehicle was discovered in Park County, some 115 miles from Denver.
Park County Sheriff Tom McGraw said a male body was found near where they found the studentt's SUV but they have not yet identified the body.
In a press conference earlier in the day, Denver Police Chief Ron Thomas and other officials said emergency personnel received calls about the East High School shooting at around 9:50 a.m.
Local emergency responders arrived earlier at the school to help a student with an allergic reaction, and these medics were quick to treat the two injured administrators.
Colorado Student Involved in East High Shooting Was Under School Safety Plan
As part of the school's safety protocol established with him due to prior behavioral issues, the Colorado student was subject to daily pat-downs before he entered the school.
Officials said Austin Lyle had never brought in a weapon until Wednesday, when the shooting occurred in a school's front office and far from other staff and students. Several rounds were fired.
After that, the Colorado student fled the school, and the weapon was never found, said Denver Police Chief Ron Thomas., CNN reported.
"We are looking for the suspect," Mayor Michael Hancock said, adding that they will track down the person responsible for the East High School shooting and make sure justice is served for the two employees who were hurt while doing their jobs to keep the public safe.
The mayor pleaded for the public's assistance in locating Lyle, who was last seen wearing a hoodie with an astronaut on it.
However, he warned that the Colorado student should be considered "armed and dangerous and willing to use the weapon, as we learned this morning."
Colorado Student Already on Probation For a 'Ghost Gun' Incident in 2021
The Colorado student was apprehended in 2021 for having a "ghost pistol" and a large capacity magazine, or extended magazine. According to law enforcement sources, Austin Lyle is still on probation for that incident.
While Lyle is a juvenile, Denver police released Lyle's name and photo Wednesday afternoon despite being a juvenile. Police said they were publicly identifying Lyle, who is wanted for attempted murder, because of "the public safety concern that he poses."
Students at Overland High School in 2021 who saw photos of Lyle holding a pistol on social media reported him to the authorities, several law enforcement sources who were familiar with Lyle told CBS News Colorado.
Aurora police allegedly discovered a firearm without a serial number and an extended magazine while checking Lyle's residence.
According to the sources, the teen was arrested, and a judge put him on probation, which is still in effect. In Colorado, it is illegal for a juvenile to possess a handgun.
The school district said Lyle was kicked out of Overland High School. The sources noted that the Colorado student had other run-ins with police, but they were minor.
