A Nashville school shooting has claimed the lives of three children and three adults, local authorities confirm, according to NPR.

The suspect, Audrey Hale, 28, from the Nashville area, was killed by gunfire from two police officers.

A police spokesperson later claimed the shooter, who had been assigned female at birth, identified as male and used he/him pronouns.

Nashville's The Covenant School, a private Christian institution, was the site of the incident.

The victims were pupils and school staff members, said Nashville police spokesman Don Aaron at a news briefing Monday.

Authorities identified the victims Monday afternoon:

  • Evelyn Dieckhaus, 9
  • Hallie Scruggs, 9
  • William Kinney, 9
  • Cynthia Peak, 61
  • Katherine Koonce, 60
  • Mike Hill, 61

Nashville School Shooting Suspect Audrey Hale Was a Former Student

The deadly assault on the private Christian school a 28-year-old had attended may have been motivated by "resentment," according to Nashville police.

Audrey Hale, a native of Nashville, was reported to have killed three children and three adults at The Covenant School without a prior criminal record.

"There's some belief that there was some resentment for having to go to that school," Metropolitan Nashville Police Chief John Drake told Lester Holt of NBC News.

Using precise maps and surveillance equipment, Hale allegedly meticulously planned the attack, according to the authorities.

Drake refrained from saying that Hale was explicitly aiming for anyone, despite speculation that the shooter may have chosen The Covenant School as a target.

Koonce, who died in the Nashville school shooting, was the head of the school.

"She targeted random students in the school ... whoever she came in contact with, she fired rounds," Drake said, referring to the shooter.

Hale opened a locked door by shooting it, said the officials.

Meanwhile, local and federal investigators are looking into the former student's purported writings.

Several hours after the shooting, Drake informed reporters that they had certain writings they were going over that pertained to the actual incident.

"We have a map drawn out of how this was all going to take place," Drake said.

Authorities believe that Audrey Hale identifies as trans, Drake added, but they have not yet determined whether the suspect's gender identity was a factor in the incident.

Nashville School Shooting Suspect Audrey Hale Fatally Shot

Nashville police officers walked into the school when they heard gunshots and fatally shot Audrey Hale at 10:27 a.m., according to authorities, Fox News reports.

A car nearby which Hale used, helped authorities identify the shooter, said Drake.

Hale resides roughly three miles from the location of The Covenant School, according to public records.

The FBI, ATF, and local police taped off the neighborhood around that house as a crime scene Monday.

Hale is a graphic designer who makes logos for companies, according to her LinkedIn profile and a personal website associated with him. It also said he earned a degree in art and graphic design from Nossi College of Art last year.

The Covenant School, where the Nashville school shooting happened, opened its doors in 2001 in the Green Hills neighborhood southwest of downtown Nashville, serving students in preschool through sixth grade. Hale's exact enrollment dates were not immediately apparent.
