Brazil: Teenager Stabs and Kills Teacher, Wounds 5 Others in Sao Paolo
A stabbing attack in a school in Sao Paolo, Brazil has left many in the South American country reeling, as a 13-year-old boy stabbed one of his teachers to death before attacking and injuring five others.
Three teachers and two fellow students were taken to a nearby hospital following the fatal knife attack. All five were from the Thomazia Montoro school in Sao Paulo, where the 13-year-old suspect also studied.
The teenage attacker has been detained by the Sao Paolo state military police, according to the Associated Press. They are now also investigating the matter.
Meanwhile, Sao Paulo State Secretary of Education Renato Feder has announced that the teachers were not at risk and the students' injuries were only minor. He also announced a three-day mourning period in honor of the 71-year-old teacher who died.
Sao Paolo Governor Tarcísio de Freitas wrote on social media, saying, "Our efforts are concentrated on helping the wounded and comforting the family members."
Attacker Restrained by a P.E. Teacher While Elderly Teacher Died of Cardiac Arrest After Being Stabbed
The teacher who died went into cardiac arrest after the student stabbed her. According to Channel News Asia, the Brazilian military police would have usually rescued her via helicopter, but she was already in cardiac arrest. They had to rescue her by land, which was slower, and she later passed away.
Witnesses said the student reportedly wore a skull mask to school and stabbed the teacher from behind. Police stated that he had been researching how to purchase firearms online before going on his stabbing rampage.

Sao Paolo State Secretary of Public Safety Guilherme Derrite stated that a physical education teacher at the school restrained the teenage attacker to prevent him from injuring even more people.
The secretary praised the teacher and said it was a "heroic act" as the secretary noted more damage could have been done if the said teacher did not restrain the student and taken the knife away from him.
Police are still investigating the incident, and no motive has officially been revealed to the public yet.
Brazilian Boy in Sao Paolo Stabbing May Have Been Inspired by a 2019 Shooting
While there is still no established motive for this deadly attack, Brazilian media is speculating that it may have been inspired by a 2019 Brazil school shooting Brazil.
According to Al Jazeera News, the suspect wrote under the username "Taucci" on Twitter. This seems to be a reference to the March 2019 Suzano school shooting, as one of the two school shooters was identified as Guilherme Taucci Monteiro, who was only 17 at the time of the attack.
He and 25-year-old Luiz Henrique de Castro opened fire at the Raul Brasil State School and killed seven people, including five students and two employees. The two, who were reportedly inspired by the Columbine Massacre, killed themselves.
