In a statement, the San Francisco Police Department said officers responded to reports of a stabbing at the 300 block of Main Street in the Rincon Hills area on April 4 at 2:35 a.m.
When they arrived, they found Bob Lee with life-threatening injuries. He was then rushed to a hospital but died from his injuries. Police said homicide detectives were still investigating the stabbing incident.
San Francisco district attorney Brooke Jenkins said on Twitter that no arrests had been made, as of Wednesday morning, adding that they do not tolerate "horrific acts of violence" in San Francisco.
The New York Times reported that the Democratic San Francisco city supervisor representing Rincon Hill, Matt Dorsey, said Lee's death was a "senseless tragedy" that "is made worse" because there was no suspect in custody over the killing.
Dorsey noted that he has been in touch with law enforcement regarding the stabbing investigation since Tuesday. He urged everyone to cooperate with the police, particularly those with access to surveillance video that may help.
Dorsey said that some constituents in the area had already voiced their concerns about public safety challenges.
Lee's father said in a Facebook post that his son recently moved to Miami and that he moved in with him after Lee's mother died in 2019.
Lee was only in San Francisco, California, for a visit , but it was unknown how long he had been in the city or where he was staying.
Lee's brother, Tim Oliver Lee, also posted on Facebook about his brother's death, saying that he was fortunate to grow up with him, adding that he feels like he lost part of himself with his death.
Bill Barhydt, the chief executive of digital financial platform Abra, said Lee was a "generous decent human being who didn't deserve to be killed."
Megan Quinn, a start-up investor, noted that Lee was "always encouraging, always upbeat." Surveillance cameras in the area captured Lee walking up on Main Street after he had been stabbed, CBS News reported.
Longtime friend Doug Dalton said he and Lee, with other friends, got together the night before he was killed.
