President Joe Biden formally announced today his plans to run for reelection in 2024 U.S. Presidential Elections.

In a video announcing his run, Biden noted attacks on democracy faced over the past few years, many led by supporters of Donald Trump, and Biden declared that the "fight for democracy" that he began in his first term is not yet finished.

May Boeve, 350 Action Executive Director, on Biden's Reelection Bid

"President Biden ran on big climate promises in 2020, and he has had some initial climate wins in his first two years in office. Most notably, Biden helped usher in truly historic climate legislation-and $370 billion in climate funds-with the Inflation Reduction Act. He also recently passed the most stringent automobile emission regulations in history. Not only that, but Biden has understood that the battle for climate action and the battle for democracy are interlinked: he has delivered for the progressive movement - on labor, rights, and care - in ways that make the whole movement stronger.

But Biden has also betrayed frontline communities and climate scientists' warnings by approving major fossil fuels projects like the Willow Project and the Alaska LNG export project, locking us into increased greenhouse gas emissions at a time when the science could not be clearer that we need to end all fossil fuels. But Biden can still stop Willow, and we call on him to do so.

To win in 2024, Biden will need the support of climate champions, frontline communities, and Gen Z. To earn that support, we call on him to truly be the climate president he claims to be and live up to his climate promises by stopping ALL new fossil fuel projects and prioritizing the transition to real, justly sourced, justly implemented, renewable energy solutions. Over the next year, Biden still has the opportunity to demonstrate what it means for a U.S. president to prioritize people and planet over profit and pollution. The people will be watching."
