After undergoing a psychiatric evaluation, it was concluded that South African track star Oscar Pistorius was not mentally ill when he fatally shot his girlfriend last year.

Prosecutors announced at trial on Monday that the 27-year-old Olympic star was perfectly sane when he killed Reeva Steenkamp on Feb. 14, 2013, reports The New York Times.

Pistorius' trial, which is being held in the South African capital of Pretoria, had been suspended since mid-May while Pistorius was being tested at the Weskoppies Psychiatric Hospital. During the trial's one-month break, a psychologist and three psychiatrists assessed whether the double-amputee runner was capable of understanding his actions when he shot the 29-year-old model through a closed toilet door.

Prosecutor Gerrie Nel cited key parts of the conclusion, noting that the mental health experts believed Pistorius was "capable of appreciating the wrongfulness of his act" when he killed the law graduate, ESPN reported.

During the murder trial, Nel has argued that the disabled athlete killed the blonde beauty after a Valentine's Day argument, while he was in a fit of rage. He requested an independent inquiry earlier this year to examine Pistorius' state of mind based on concern that the defense would argue that Pistorius was not guilty because of mental illness.

The defense argued that he opened fire after mistakenly thinking that an intruder had entered his home and was hiding in a toilet cubicle. According to his lawyers, the athlete was on his stumps when he killed Steenkamp, and he was more likely to try to confront a perceived danger rather than flee because of his limited ability to move without prostheses.

During cross-examination, however, prosecutors raised the possibility that Pistorius could have tried to run away from a perceived intruder. Nel also stated that Pistorius hurried back to his bedroom after the shooting and made other movements, which indicate that he was not as hampered by his disability.

Pistorius faces 25 years to life in prison if found guilty of premeditated murder. He is currently free on bail.
