The main suspect in the California Serial Stabbings, Carlos Dominguez, might not get his date in court as his lawyer stated that his client is mentally unfit to stand trial. He has been charged with the murders of two people and the attempted murder of a third victim in Davis, California.

Dominguez is being represented by a public defender, Dan Hutchinson, who determined that the man dubbed the "Serial Stabber" has not yet showered since he was arrested and often goes days without eating. A student at the University of California in Davis, the 21-year-old murder suspect also believes he will return to class soon.

Hutchinson stated that he will present evidence that his client has been showing "outward signs of schizophrenia toward the end of his freshman year."

"He sits there each day in his empty cell, unclothed, unmedicated, untreated for his mental illness," the public defender stated. "He has not showered a single time, and if he ever has brushed his teeth, nobody appears to have seen that." However, prosecutors think Carlos Dominguez is "toying with the system" and should face a criminal trial.

The decision on whether he is fit to stand trial will ultimately fall in the hands of the jury, according to the Associated Press. To be found that he is mentally unfit to stand trial, the suspected California Serial Stabber must show that he "cannot currently understand court proceedings, assist his attorney in his defense and understand his own status in the criminal proceeding."

Should jurors find Dominguez unfit, a state mental health hospital will evaluate him for treatment and the trial will not proceed on the grounds of insanity.

The California Serial Stabbings Left Davis on Edge

The California serial stabbings has terrorized the northern California college town of Davis. When Dominguez was still at large, he caused panic around town, with many afraid of walking the streets. Davis police eventually arrested him and found a large knife in his backpack.

According to The Guardian, Dominguez matched the description eyewitnesses gave of the "serial stabber" who attacked people around the University of California Davis. He was reportedly wearing the same clothes as the man whom witnesses saw commit the third stabbing.

Police received about 15 tips, all of whom pointed to the same description that matched Carlos Dominguez.

California Serial Stabbings Victims

The first victim was identified as David Breaux, who was found stabbed to death at the Davis Central Park on April 27. He was well known in the community and was often called the "Compassion Guy" for asking others about their definition of "compassion."

The second victim is Karim Abou Najm, a 20-year-old UC Davis student. He was found stabbed to death at the Sycamore Park in Davis, just two days after Breaux's body was found. He was an immigrant from Lebanon and studied computer science. He was supposed to graduate just six weeks before he was killed.

The third and final victim actually survived the attack, and she is 64-year-old Kimberlee Guillory. She is a homeless woman and was stabbed through a tent in the town's homeless encampment. She was rushed to a nearby hospital and underwent surgery. Soon, she was alert and talking, and was able to describe the attacker.

Dominguez has since been expelled from UC-Davis.
