Florida: Man Reported Missing After Carnival Cruise Ship Returns to Port Miami
South Florida authorities are actively searching for a missing individual last seen aboard a Carnival Cruise ship, according to WFLA.
The Miami-Dade Police Department has reported that Kevin McGrath, a 26-year-old passenger, was reported missing on Monday following the return of the Carnival Conquest to Port Miami.
McGrath was last seen by his cabinmate at approximately 7 am Monday, when guests were expected to disembark from the ship, said Carnival Cruise Line.
McGrath could not be located anywhere on the cruise ship despite an extensive search.
Subsequently, the U.S. Coast Guard was engaged to search the surrounding waters, but he was not found there either.
The Carnival Cruise Line stated, "The guest was not detected by surveillance systems, including U.S. Customs and Border Patrol, during the debarkation process." Eventually, Miami-Dade police cleared the ship for departure.
McGrath is 5 feet 9 inches tall, weighing 170 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes.
At the time of his disappearance, he was wearing a black T-shirt, black shorts, and gray sneakers.
Missing Carnival Cruise Passenger Was Supposed To Meet His Family
Angel Rodriguez, a detective from the Miami-Dade Police Department, provided further details about the disappearance of Kevin McGrath.
According to Rodriguez, McGrath's brother last saw him around 2 am at his cabin, PEOPLE noted.
The family had planned to have breakfast together before disembarking from the ship, but McGrath never showed up.
Concerned about his absence, the family initiated a search with the help of ship staff and security, but their efforts proved fruitless.
Despite these efforts and the involvement of US Customs and Border Patrol, McGrath was not located during the debarkation process.
Eventually, Florida's Miami-Dade police cleared the ship for departure.
The U.S. Coast Guard also conducted a helicopter search to locate the missing passenger.
Royal Caribbean Cruise Ship Passenger Jumps
In a similar incident, a 19-year-old passenger went overboard from a Royal Caribbean cruise ship in the Caribbean, prompting an ongoing search and rescue effort, per CNN.
The incident occurred during the cruise of the Royal Caribbean ship Wonder of the Seas, which embarked from Port Canaveral, Florida, on August 27 for a seven-day journey in the western Caribbean.
Details regarding how the 19-year-old went overboard and the duration of time he spent in the water before the search commenced remain unclear.
Royal Caribbean stated that the ship's onboard crew swiftly initiated a search and rescue operation and is collaborating closely with local authorities.
However, Sigmund Ropich's family, who confirmed he was a passenger on the cruise, expressed their desperation for answers and frustration with the limited information provided by Cuban Border Guard officials, who are leading the search.
Savannah Ropich, Sigmund's sister, emphasized their desire to bring their brother home, lamenting the extended duration of the search and the lack of communication from authorities.
The search for Sigmund Ropich is ongoing, and the family continues to hope for his safe return.
