Washington, DC police are now investigating an attack at the Cuban Embassy after at least one Molotov cocktail was thrown at Cuba's diplomatic mission to the US.

Secret Service officials are now involved in the investigation as they were called to the Cuban Embassy at around 8:00 PM on Sunday. Embassy officials reported that somebody threw a "possible incendiary device" at the building.

According to the Associated Press, nobody was injured in the attack, and the Molotov cocktail was not able to do any significant damage to the building itself. No fire has been reported either, but so far, nobody has been arrested yet as investigations continue.

Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez wrote on social media that the Cuban Embassy, which was located on a busy street in the Adams-Morgan section of Washington DC, "was the target of a terrorist attack by an individual who threw 2 Molotov cocktails." He also confirmed that there were no injuries or damage.

Neither the foreign minister nor the Cuban Embassy immediately responded to requests for any additional information regarding the attack.

The Cuban Embassy is located in an area filled with embassies from other countries. It is located between the embassies of Poland and Lithuania.

Cuban Officials Condemn Molotov Cocktail Attack at Their Embassy

Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel issued a statement after the Molotov cocktail attack, condemning it and saying that the violence "could have cost valuable lives."

The Cuban Embassy's Chargé d'Affaires in Washington DC, Lianys Torres Rivera, also confirmed that they are already cooperating with local authorities and have provided samples of the Molotov cocktails. The Cuban official also confirmed that the two make-shift incendiary devices failed to ignite.

According to CNN, this was not the first time the Cuban Embassy in Washington DC was attacked, as a man previously opened fire at the building with an AK-47 in April 2020. While nobody was injured from that attack, the Cuban Embassy suffered some "considerable material damage" due to the bullet holes.

The previous attacker was found to be a Cuban man, and he fired almost three dozen rounds into the embassy building. He was then arrested and told authorities that he did the firing because he wanted to "get them before they could get him." He managed to damage the embassy door and the bronze statue of Jose Marti, the Cuban writer and national hero.

Cuba also called the attack an act of "terrorism."

US Officials Also Condemn Molotov Cocktail Attack at the Cuban Embassy

National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan released a statement, according to Politico.

"The United States strongly condemns Sunday's reported attack on the Cuban embassy in Washington, DC. Attacks against diplomatic facilities are unacceptable," he said in his statement. "We are in contact with Cuban embassy officials and law enforcement authorities to ensure an appropriate and timely investigation as well as to offer our support for future protective efforts."
