Design
Theorema comes forward with some fancy and festive designs. When I first stumbled upon these timepieces I noticed the heavy use of skeleton compositions. If you are a fan of these see-through arrangements, you will find a plethora of models in this collection. The skeleton designs allow you to see the movement of the watch working inside the case. Now, that is quite a show that attracts even those who are really not fond of watches. So, the wow-effect is definitely a plus.
Most of these timepieces are quite striking and they suit classic and business wear quite well. Although these fancy watches may not be your go-to everyday accessory, they offer some models which are quite versatile and can be easily paired with more casual wear (think of their Macau, Kingston or Casablanca collections).
Surely, what has now become a distinct element of this brand, some models draw inspiration from architectural cities or monuments. In specific, Istanbul is one of their most notable watches which, as the name implies, is inspired by the vibrant culture of Istanbul. The half-circular sub-dial combined with the dotted markers mix together creating one of the most unique watches I've seen.
Quality
The case
Theorema's cases often have a mix of polished and brushed finish. They feel well-built, with no sharp edges and properly shaped. Very elegantly created. In the majority of the models, the back of the case features an open display window allowing the wearer to see the movement inside.
The bezels are mostly simple which really fits into the classy/fancy look of the watches. At most you can find some numbered bezels (Madrid or Rio) but even they feature elegant and fine number markings. I can pinpoint two models which had special bezels: Lagos with a six-screw bezel and Sao Paulo with Roman numerals on the bezel.
The crystal
All Theorema watches come with a sapphire coated lens and sapphire crystal. The lenses are nicely shaped and rounded on the edge. The clarity is great, and I trust the scratch-resistance of the material to keep the surface looking brand new for years. Sapphire crystal is renowned for its exceptional hardness, surpassed only by diamond, making it highly resistant to scratches and scuffs that may occur during daily wear. Sapphire crystal possesses excellent transparency, allowing for optimal visibility of the watch dial and hands. It also offers superior clarity, ensuring minimal distortion. This feature enhances the legibility of the watch, allowing for a clear and unobstructed view of the time display.
The dial and hands
Almost all dials feature fine engravings and elegant details. Some even have multi-textured faces, sun/moon phase indicators and dual-time sub-dials. Since the movements often feature blued screws, the splash of color works with the see-through composition. The skeleton dials play well with sunlight and you can choose different colors and finishes. They are overall well-executed and all the details are well-aligned.
The Theorema logo is pretty much always displayed on the dial, but it never feels out of place. The words Made-in-Germany are also printed on the dial, at times accompanied by a text denoting the type of the movement (automatic or mechanical). Somehow they manage to add these details in a way that it doesn't make the face of the watch seem overcrowded.
The hour markers are nicely polished, often in an elegant stick shape of Roman numerals. They create a slight contrast with the dial. Theorema mostly uses stick hands that are easily legible despite the vibrant skeleton dials, but you will see collections with Roman and Arabic numerals, dots, or diamonds as markers. The occasional use of double-colored hands creates a trendy feel without steering too far away from the classic aesthetic. In some design having even skeletonized hands was very impressive.
The Crown
In regards to the crown, as many timepieces from Theorema are actually mechanical watches, it is important for the crown to provide a good grip, and Theorema doesn't disappoint. Easy to pull and rotate, I have no complaints with the crowns. I also like the fact that they incorporate onion crowns quite often (the one in Paragon being my favorite).
Strap & Buckle
Theorema watches are available in both leather bands and stainless steel bracelets. The leather is thick and looks amazing. It may seem a bit rigid at first but it will easily bend to your wrist after the first time you wear it. Personally, I like leather watches the best, so I bought the Buenos Aires Theorema. The fish pattern is really likable! There are other models which feature this pattern as well if you prefer another design. The stainless steel bracelets are another choice if you are a fan of the shiny and sleek look they provide.
Theorema from Tufina has watches with both standard buckles and butterfly deployment clasps. I was pleasantly surprised to see that each clasp features the Theorema logo, a nice touch which makes the watch feel more expensive. Good to know that they went that extra mile to pay attention to the tiniest details. It surely pays off in terms of exclusivity.
Movement
To be able to see every detail of the complex arrangement of gears, springs, and other components in a German watch from Tufina it's truly a unique feeling that makes the user want to wear it more. In my experience, Theorema watches have robust and well functioning movements. Accuracy when I wound them daily or leave them on the winding box it's beyond captivating at +/- 3 seconds in 24 hours. I have never had a problem with them yet. Truth be told, the Buenos Aires Theorema was also my first watch with a mechanical skeletonized movement, and I can confidently say I get what all the hype is about. The detailed workings are really nice to look at. In terms of quality, these movements are thoroughly tested so you can expect great accuracy. With the in-house movement, in-house individually hand assembly, and in-house computer testing, Theorema follows all the Made-in-Germany standards of quality according to the EU laws.
On the wrist
Let's get into how it feels to wear a Theorema watch. The Buenos Aires Theorema is big but doesn't look like it. Without any doubt it is bold and has an amazing wrist presence. Thankfully, it still manages to look elegant since every element, from the case to the strap, is proportional. Lug to lug is still very reasonable and the weight is perfect. Never a sense of extra heaviness on my wrist. As I've already mentioned, the leather band is comfortable, but bare with it at the start. I have worn this watch for hours on end and it never made me tired or uncomfortable.
Price
Theorema offers watches at a wide price range. Considering the custom elements, in-house hand-assembly process and quality movements, I think the prices are definitely fair. You can find more expensive watches in the market that are not nearly as good as these bad boys. Lucky for us, one of their goals is to make high-end quality watches accessible to everyone. So, whether you are willing to spend $4000 on a luxury tourbillon or you're looking for a more affordable $350 skeleton timepiece, every single one of their models offers a cost-effective purchase.
Conclusion
Theorema watches offer quality and craftsmanship, all at a price that won't empty your wallet. These watches strike the perfect balance between classic and stylish, incorporating just the right amount of delicate engravings and details. Speaking of quality, you're definitely not just getting an ordinary timepiece. With their custom designs and the in-house hand-assembly process, this brand presents an irresistibly attractive option for those who want an exclusive watch. If you're a fan of German timepieces with a twist of classic charm, Tufina is definitely a choice you won't regret.
