Dominican Republic Dead Babies: Drunk Cemetery Caretaker Turns Self In After Forgetting ‘About the Corpses’ of 6 Dead Newborns
The discovery of 6 dead babies in a Dominican Republic cemetery has disturbed many around the world. However, the reason it happened was that a drunk caretaker forgot about the bodies of the dead newborns and just left them outside the graveyard.
The grisly discovery made headlines in the Dominican Republic, perplexing and shocking many in the Caribbean country. The six dead babies were found in the town of Santo Domingo Este, which is near the capital of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
According to the Associated Press, they were there because the cemetery caretaker, identified as Hilario Pascual, admitted in a video statement before turning himself in, that the six dead newborns' bodies were dropped off at the cemetery after hours. However, he had already started drinking by then and said that he had forgotten about them.
The discovery prompted a massive police investigation, with the hospital where the babies were born, the Juan Bosch City Hospital, being investigated. However, the institution stated that it had transferred the bodies on Tuesday to the funeral home called El Popular to be buried.
El Popular's spokesperson, Julian Encarnacion Montero, meanwhile, told local media that the bodies were already taken from the funeral home and given to the cemetery. He added that the bodies were given to the caretaker.
Manhunt For Cemetery Caretaker Was Launched Over the 6 Dead Babies in the Dominican Republic
The funeral home's spokesperson also presented a copy of the conversation their people had with the caretaker, who admitted that he really did forget about the dead babies, according to ABC News. This then launched a manhunt for Pascual who then turned himself in to authorities.
The newborns themselves actually died on different dates and of different causes. While some were stillborn, others died just a few hours after being born. These dead babies often become unclaimed by their parents because they cannot afford to pay for a funeral or burial for them.
It is noted that hospital officials often allow several weeks to go by death and burial. Once a certain number of bodies have piled up, these Dominican Republic hospitals then contact funeral homes to bury them, properly. These funeral homes often contact cemeteries to complete the process.
Cemetery Caretaker Talks About How the Dominican Republic Dead Babies Incident Happened
The cemetery caretaker, Hilario Pascual, actually released a video before he gave himself up. He stated that the bodies were dropped off way after the graveyard closed. A worker from El Popular then handed him 1,000 DR Pesos (which is $17) but did not bring any proper documentation for the bodies. Pascual also added that the bodies were placed outside the cemetery entrance.
However, he admitted that when the dead newborns were dropped off at the cemetery, he was already drinking. He then forgot about them and went back home. The next morning, he received a phone call from a friend, finding out about the horrific discovery, according to The Daily Mail.
