Wimbledon Tennis 2014 Scores, Recap, Video Highlights: Rafael Nadal Loses to Nick Kyrgios; Roger Federer Advances
Rafael Nadal crashed out of the 2014 Wimbledon after absorbing a huge upset loss against unseeded Nick Kyrgios of Australia 7-6 (5), 5-7, 67-6 (5), 6-3, in their fourth-round showdown on Tuesday.
Nadal said before the match that young players are dangerous, and he was right as Kyrgios played like he has nothing to lose, hitting 37 service aces, while also scoring a between-the-legs game-winner in the match.
"That's [what] happens when you have nothing to lose," Nadal said via ESPN. "You can play that way. Congratulations to him. For me, beach. For me, I going to go to the beach in Mallorca."
The 19-year-old Australian, who is a wild-card entry in this year's Wimbledon, arranged a showdown with eighth-seeded Milos Raonic of Canada in the quarterfinals.
Meanwhile, Roger Federer continues to impress in the tournament as he progressed to the quarterfinals with an impressive 6-1, 6-1, 6-4 win against Tommy Robredo of Spain.
Federer, who is looking to win his first grand slam since winning the 2012 Wimbledon, was in his top form on Tuesday, hitting 11 aces and breaking Robredo four times in the match that only lasted for 90 minutes.
"It's really nice the way I'm playing," Federer said. "I'm serving well, moving well, returning all right, so all the things are happening that need to be happening to go deep in this tournament again."
Federer, who has not dropped a set in this year's Wimbledon, will face compatriot Stanislas Wawrinka in the quarterfinals. The fifth-seeded Wawrinka reached the Wimbledon quarterfinals for the first time in his career after defeating Feliciano Lopez 7-6 (5), 7-6 (7), 6-3 in the fourth round.
On the women's side, reigning French Open champion Maria Sharapova was also sent packing after Angelique Kerber of Germany escaped with a 7-6 (4), 4-6, 6-4 win in their fourth-round showdown.
Kerber will next face Eugenie Bouchard, who has been playing well this year.
Bouchard, who defeated Kerber in the fourth round of the French Open, will look to reach the semifinals of a grand slam for the third time this year after also reaching the final four of the Australian Open and French Open.
