Donald Trump Sidesteps Sean Hannity's Question If He Will Abuse Power If Reelected But Then Admits He Will
Donald Trump sat down with Fox News host Sean Hannity in what many expected to be a softball interview. However, the former president tried to avoid the issue of whether or not he would commit abuses of power should he be reelected, only for him to sort of admit that he would.
The question from Hannity came after the former president received a wave of criticism for vowing to act like a dictator and promising to go after his political opponents even if he did not really have any case against them, to begin with. During his campaign, Trump vowed "retribution" if he is elected again in 2024.
"Do you in any way have any plans whatsoever if reelected president to abuse power, to break the law, to use the government to go after people?" asked the Fox News host initially.
However, Trump did not directly answer the question and instead pointed to his own four indictments and claimed that the Biden administration is perpetuating abuse of power against him instead, despite the mountains of evidence saying otherwise.
However, Hannity continued pressing Trump about his promises to abuse his office and made him admit he would act like a dictator on "day one."
"Under no circumstances, you are promising America tonight you would never abuse power as retribution against anybody?" Hannity asked. To this, Trump answered, "Except for day one. I want to close the border and I want to drill, drill, drill."
CNN noted that Trump and his campaign have been plotting to use the power of the presidency in ways that would test its limits, including asserting more White House control over the Justice Department which is supposed to be independent from White House control.
Joe Biden Blasts Donald Trump's Remarks After Sean Hannity Interview
Moments after the Sean Hannity interview, Joe Biden reacted to his speculative rival's comments by warning the American people about how dangerous Trump will be to democracy, posting a clip of Trump's answer to the abuse of power question on X.
Biden campaign manager Julie Chávez Rodriguez also sounded off, saying, "Donald Trump has been telling us exactly what he will do if he's reelected and tonight he said he will be a dictator on day one," adding that "Americans should believe him."
New Evidence To Be Presented Vs. Donald Trump Over January 6 Case
As Trump continues to campaign and show off his authoritarian tendencies, a new filing from Special Counsel Jack Smith regarding the January 6 and federal election interference case showed that prosecutors plan to introduce new evidence during the trial to prove the former president's illegal attempts to overturn the 2020 election results.
The various new pieces of evidence are said to pre-date and post-date Trump's alleged criminal actions and will "establish his motive, intent, preparation, knowledge, absence of mistake, and common plan," per Newsweek.
