The trial of former New York City Mayor and Former Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani finally began as he faced a lawsuit from Georgia election workers over his false election claims after the former Time Magazine Man of the Year falsely accused them of fraud while pushing Donald Trump's baseless claims after the 2020 election.

Georgia election workers Ruby Freeman and her daughter, Wandrea "Shaye" Moss suffered various kinds of harassment after Giuliani accused them of undermining the election and they filed the lawsuit because of that. They are suing for reputational damages could reach $47 million, and suggested emotional and punitive damages. This means that the former mayor could pay "tens of millions" more should he lose the case.

Giuliani, along with other Trump allies, as well as the former president himself, spread the conspiracy theory, resulting in the two women going into hiding after receiving so many threats. Some of those threats were recorded and its audio was played inside the courtroom on Monday.

Von DuBose, the attorney representing the two women, showed threats accusing the women of treason and threatening to hang them. He also explained that people would show up at Freeman's home to pound on her door and at her mother's house to make "citizen's arrests," according to Fox 29.

"Mr. Giuliani and his co-conspirators stole the lives of Ms. Moss and Ms. Freeman by destroying their names," DuBose told the jury before playing recordings of Giuliani falsely accusing the Georgia election workers of sneaking in ballots in suitcases, counting ballots multiple times, and tampering with voting machines. The lawyer then told the jury that none of Giuliani's accusations against his clients were true.

Trial in Lawsuit Vs. Rudy Giuliani To Only Determine If He Should Pay Damages

Much like Donald Trump's New York fraud trial, the judge has already issued a pretrial judgment and found that Rudy Giuliani did in fact defame the two Georgia election workers and that this trial would only be to determine damages.

According to Politico, US District Court Judge Beryl Howell already found that Giuliani defamed Freeman and Moss and caused them emotional distress. She also found that Giuliani purposely hid evidence, including evidence about his net worth.

The only role that the jury has now is to determine what the former New York City mayor's punishment would be. They could also tie the harm that he has caused both women for additional "punitive" damages meant to deter others from acting similarly in the future.

Rudy Giuliani Repeats False Claim After Judge Rules That Claim To Be Defamatory

Despite the judge ruling that his claims against the two Georgia election workers were untrue and defamatory, Rudy Giuliani repeated those claims in court, insisting what he said about them was true.

"Everything I said about them is true," he reportedly told reporters. "Of course, I don't regret it, I told the truth. They were engaged in changing votes."

This immediately got a reaction from the plaintiffs as they asked the trial judge to tell Giuliani that statements such as those are out of bounds in court, with their filing stating. "Needless to say, were Defendant Giuliani to testify in a manner remotely resembling those comments, he would be in plain violation of the Court's prior orders in this case conclusively affirming, and reaffirming, that all elements of liability have been established, including that Defendant Giuliani's defamatory statements were false."
