Andre Braugher, 'Brooklyn Nine-Nine' and ‘Homicide: Life on the Street’ Star, Dead at 61
Andre Braugher, best known for his role as Captain Raymond Holt in the hit police comedy series, "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" alongside Terry Crews and Andy Samberg, has died at the age of 61.
His longtime rep, Jennifer Allen, spoke with The Hollywood Reporter and revealed that he died on Monday after a "brief illness." No further details regarding what that "brief illness" specifically was have not revealed so far.
The Chicago native's official cause of death has also not been revealed yet, but he will be missed by millions of fans who loved his work on "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" and "Homicide: Life On The Street."
He received critical acclaim for his role as master interrogator Det. Frank Pembleton on NBC's "Homicide: Life on the Street," even winning his very first Emmy Award for that role. However, his most famous and popular role is of course, as Captain Raymond Holt in "Brooklyn None-Nine." While he never won any Emmy Award for that role, he was nominated four times because of it.
'Brooklyn Nine-Nine' Star Andre Braugher Remembered For Award-Winning Acting Career
Braugher was a two-time Emmy winner and 11-time nominee. He also has over 100 TV and film credits to his name in his over 35-year career as an actor. His first big role came in Edward Zwick's 1989 Civil War film, "Glory," which saw Denzel Washington win his first Oscar Award.
With his passing, He also appeared in several big films like "The Tuskegee Airmen" and Spike Lee's "Get on the Bus." His acting chops were also shown in the 2006 FX miniseries, "Thief," where he had the lead role. This series also landed him his second Emmy Award, according to Deadline.
'Brooklyn Nine-Nine' Producers, Terry Crews, React to Andre Braugher's Death
Following his passing, several people from his most recent hit, "Brooklyn Nine-Nine," took to social media to remember the late Andre Braugher. This includes co-star Terry Crews, who played Sgt. Terry Jeffords in the show.
"Can't believe you're gone so soon. I'm honored to have known you, laughed with you, worked with you and shared 8 glorious years watching your irreplaceable talent. This hurts. You left us too soon. You taught me so much. I will be forever grateful for the experience of knowing you," wrote the former NFL star on Instagram. "Thank you for your wisdom, your advice, your kindness and your friendship. Deepest condolences to your wife and family in this difficult time. You showed me what a life well lived looks like."
The show's executive producers also released a joint statement which read, "Like everyone who was fortunate enough to know Andre, we are heartbroken by the news of his passing. He was one of the most talented dramatic actors in history, and then he decided to try comedy, and he was instantly one of the funniest people ever to do it. But even greater than his acting talent was the happiness and joy he brought to those around him. And his smile... he had the greatest, brightest, most wonderful smile. Our thoughts and love go to his beautiful, amazing family, whom he loved more than anything."
They added, "We are grateful for the time we had with him."
