Florida: Calls for GOP Chair To Resign Intensify After Suspension Amid Rape Case
Florida Republican Party Chairman Christian Ziegler has been stripped of his powers and suspended, with the Republican Party of Florida demanding his resignation. Even Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is asking him to step down as his rape allegations continue to surround him and his wife, Moms For Liberty co-founder Bridget Ziegler.
The embattled Republican leader is accused of raping a woman whom he and his wife had a prior threesome with. That threesome has been consensual but his wife, Bridget, was a massive LGBTQ critic as a leader of Moms For Liberty, and her sleeping with a fellow woman with her husband has branded her a hypocrite. This revelation has led to calls for her to resign from her Sarasota School Board position as well.
"Christian Ziegler has engaged in conduct that renders him unfit for the office," read the Florida Republican Party's motion to censure Ziegler. It was reportedly posted on social media X by Lee County GOP Chairman Michael Thomason, according to the Associated Press.
Ziegler reportedly had a chance to defend himself during a recent closed-door meeting. However, the party board quickly took action against him and suspended him and demanded for him to resign.
"Ziegler on soap box trying to defend himself, not working," posted Thomson on X before the votes to censure him were confirmed. Another vote will be held in the future on whether or not they should finally remove him.
The vote to censure Ziegler was 39-0, but the party decided not to conduct a special investigation into him.
Video Evidence Places Embattled Florida Republican Party Chairman Christian Ziegler in Trouble
The Sarasota Police Department has been investigating Christian Ziegler since October. CNN has obtained a search warrant against him and his wife regarding the alleged sexual assault.
The document stated that Ziegler and his wife planned a consensual threesome with the victim but "when the victim learned that Bridget could not make it, she changed her mind and canceled with Christian."
In addition, Ziegler was caught arriving at the alleged victim's home on the day the alleged sexual assault happened. The victim stated that Christian Ziegler entered her apartment and raped her on a bar stool.
Christian Ziegler Remains Defiant Amid Florida GOP Censure
Despite being censured by the Florida GOP, Ziegler has continued to maintain his innocence and said that he will not resign as the chairman of the Florida Republican Party. So far, he has not also been charged with rape yet.
However, his critics within the Florida GOP want him gone regardless, according to the Sarasota Tribune-Herald, noting that "the information about his sex life revealed in police documents has destroyed his ability to carry the party's message into the next election cycle, and that he won't be an effective fundraiser."
"He deserves to go through the legal process," said Florida GOP Vice Chair Evan Power. "But what we have as a party is a political problem. You cannot lead the Republican Party with the charges that are standing in front of him and the admissions he's made in the affidavits. You cannot morally lead the Republican Party forward."
