Mexico has produced hundreds of telenovelas through the decades, with many of them being embraced by other countries and even having their own adaptations, from "Betty La Fea" getting turned into "Ugly Betty" in the United States to the various adaptations the Philippines made from telenovela classics like "Marimar."

Some of these telenovelas have such wacky storylines that suspension of disbelief may be required to properly enjoy them. What usually happens in these Mexican telenovelas are so out there that many are left scratching their heads at how the protagonist survived or how unrealistic the situations presented are. Despite this, no matter how unbelievable some of these stories go, they still have many of us hooked.

5 Wacky Mexican Telenovelas That Got Us Hooked

While there are hundreds of wacky telenovelas out there that have actually got us hooked, we picked only five and these are our favorites, and they are:

Rosalinda

This one is the first starring telenovela superstar Thalia on the lust, and much like all the others, this one is a doozy. It starts off with the romance between Rosalinda, played by Thalia, and Fernando Jose starting off nicely... until Fernando Jose's wicked stepmother ruins it by feeding her stepson lies about Rosalinda. This then leads to plenty of suffering, with Fernando Jose treating the protagonist very badly. However, for some reason, they get back together and live happily ever after.

Marimar

Another one starring Thalia as the titular character, this time as a "very poor" young lady who does not look one bit like she is suffering from poverty. This is the quintessential Mexican telenovela, complete with a jealous female antagonist, a hunky male lead, plenty of slaps, and a ton of car crashes. Oh, and the theme song is kinda catchy and performed by Thalia herself.

Rubi

The protagonist here can be mistaken for the antagonist as the titular Rubi herself acts like any other telenovela villain who would do everything in her power to get what she wants. However, this has oddly gotten many people hooked despite how terrible of a person Rubi is.

Maria La del Barrio

Yes, this is the third one starring Thalia and as Funny or Die describes it, the show is full of the protagonist suffering (as is common in shows Thalia stars in) as her entire family is dead, she lives by picking up garbage, and finds herself vulnerable and alone as a teenager. She finds herself in a conga line of trauma with bad thing happening after another. Don't worry though, at least we can guarantee this has a good ending, though she had to go through all that suffering to get there.

La Usorpadora

What happens when twins are separated at birth only for one of them to turn out to be evil and completely blackmail the "good one?" Well, you get "La Usorpadora." Cosmopolitan calls this one a "doozy" and they certainly are not wrong.
