US Winter Storm: National Weather Service Map Reveals Where More Snow Will Fall
Fierce winter storms are continuing to batter the US from coast to coast. The National Weather Service (NWS) released a map that shows various weather warnings across the country, from heavy rainfall to damaging winds and blizzard warnings.
NWS forecasters warn that millions of Americans are expected to see record temperatures that are expected to reach new lows, with several towns and cities being blanketed with thick snow all over the country's Lower 48 this week.
The National Weather Service weather map showed the various weather warnings in place across the Lower 48, from freezing rain in southern areas to several Midwestern states, including eastern Iowa, northern Illinois, and southern Wisconsin, getting buried in 10 inches of snow.
As Newsweek reported, the US weather map shows that the US's weather woes will continue after suffering from wildly extreme conditions last year, which included droughts followed by floods and crippling summer heatwaves, and then a bitterly and unusually cold winter.
Climate experts are also saying climate change is set to make extreme weather patterns worse, with more thunderstorms, floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, and droughts expected to hit the country later this year.
The cold weather the US is having right now is caused by an Arctic blast, which has brought subzero air temperatures and even colder wind chills this week. These conditions are set to continue until the weekend, and it may mean bad news for those voting in the Iowa caucuses as warnings of frostbite and hypothermia have been given.
US Winter Storms Also Bring About Power Outages
As these US winter storms are battering the country, thousands of homes and businesses are experiencing power outages, particularly in the Portland metro area of Oregon, where over 120,000 homes and businesses are without electricity.
According to the Associated Press, Crews in the city are working non-stop to repair the damage brought to multiple locations by the storm, with emergency repair crews trying to conduct emergency repairs and prevent sewage releases as Portland's largest sewage pump station was under partial service due to a frozen pipe.
On Sunday, tens of thousands of people were also without power in other areas of the country, including Nebraska, Michigan, New York, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. Airports were also closed, with flights being canceled or delayed in Chicago, Denver, and Seattle.
US Weather Map Shows the Numbers from the US Winter Storms
The National Weather Service has also gathered some numbers to support its US weather map and revealed that an estimated 81,994,926 people are covered by wind chill advisories, with warnings that frostbite is possible with 20 minutes of exposure outdoors.
Approximately 40,472,511 people are subject to winter weather advisories, which include freezing rain and over 2 inches of snow. Meanwhile, an estimated 19,333,340 people are under winter storm warnings, which include over 8 inches of snow.
