Donald Trump Doubles Down on Absolute Immunity Claims, Says Public Just Has To Deal With Presidents Who 'Cross the Line'
Even if a president crossed the line, people would just have to deal with it. That is the latest claim made by former President Donald Trump as he doubled down on his absolute immunity claims during an all-caps rant on his social media platform, Truth Social.
"A PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES MUST HAVE FULL IMMUNITY, WITHOUT WHICH IT WOULD BE IMPOSSIBLE FOR HIM/HER TO PROPERLY FUNCTION," he claimed. "ANY MISTAKE, EVEN IF WELL INTENDED, WOULD BE MET WITH ALMOST CERTAIN INDICTMENT BY THE OPPOSING PARTY AT TERM END."
"EVEN EVENTS THAT 'CROSS THE LINE' MUST FALL UNDER TOTAL IMMUNITY, OR IT WILL BE YEARS OF TRAUMA TRYING TO DETERMINE GOOD FROM BAD," he added as he faces over 90 felony charges. "SOMETIMES YOU JUST HAVE TO LIVE WITH 'GREAT BUT SLIGHTLY IMPERFECT."
This rant came after his own attorneys struggled to defend their position, with one of his attorneys arguing that even if a president were to order the assassination of a political rival, he would still be immune. This argument raised eyebrows all over the legal community.
As Business Insider noted, Trump's attorneys argued that unless Congress had already impeached and convicted him of a crime, he could not be prosecuted and was therefore immune. However, this is the opposite of what his lawyers previously argued in his second impeachment case in 2021, claiming that a former president should answer to the courts, not to Congress.
The DC Federal Court of Appeals expressed skepticism of Trump's absolute immunity argument, noting that a president would not be held accountable for his actions if that were the case, especially if his allies held the Senate and Congress.
Prosecutors Say Donald Trump Being Above the Law Because of Presidential Immunity is 'Awfully Scary'
Donald Trump wants the US Circuit Court of Appeals to throw out special counsel Jack Smith's criminal case against him regarding his election interference leading up to the events of January 6. According to CNN, the former president has been charged with four counts related to his efforts to stay in power after losing the election to Joe Biden, with the ex-POTUS pleading "not guilty" on all charges.
The special counsel's prosecutors argued that a president is not above the law and that it would be "awfully scary" if there were no mechanisms in place to prevent future presidents from intentionally breaking the law. This includes what Trump is accused of doing, and that is using illegal moves to try and stay in power.
Donald Trump Rape Case Takes Bizarre Turn in New York During E. Jean Carroll Cross-Examination
Trump is facing multiple court battles as he campaigns for office again, and these trials include his latest civil rape case in New York, where former Elle Magazine columnist E. Jean Carroll is suing him for defamation again.
Carroll was at the stand and testified before being cross-examined by Trump attorney Alina Habba, whose questioning soon turned to sexual commentary, leading to Carroll's lawyers objecting, with the judge sustaining that objection.
"Ms Carroll, what does this say: 'What CAN be done about the penis? It gets large when you want it small, and stays small when you want it large,'" she asked the former writer. "Those were your words, correct?" Carroll replied, "Yes," to which the discussion turned to be more about penises rather than Trump defaming her.
