Republican Rep. Ken Buck admitted that his fellow Republicans in the House were warned about Alexander Smirnov while they were investigating Hunter Biden. House Republicans, led by Kentucky Rep. James Comer and Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan, as well as right-wing media, hyped up Alexander Smirnov as a "very credible" witness despite being warned about him as stated by Buck.

Smirnov has been charged for lying about Joe Biden and Hunter Biden being paid by Ukrainian energy company Burisma, and this fraudulent testimony from the former FBI informant was central to the Republicans' impeachment inquiry into President Biden. Smirnov has previously admitted that he has ties to Russian intelligence, with his Russian contacts telling him what to say to investigators.

During an interview with CNN, Buck pushed back on impeachment efforts by his Republican colleagues. This came as the charges against Smirnov came to light, according to Newsweek. He stated that his colleagues "were warned at the time that we received the document outlining this witness' testimony ... that the credibility of this statement was not known."

"And yet people, my colleagues, went out and talked to the public about how this was credible and how it was damning and how it proved President Biden's complicity in receiving bribes," Buck told o CNN's Kaitlan Collins. "It appears to absolutely be false and to really undercut the nature of the charges."

"We've always been looking for a link between what Hunter Biden received in terms of money and Joe Biden's activities or Joe Biden receiving money. This clearly is not a credible link at this point," the Colorado Republican added. "If the impeachment inquiry was based on this witness, it undermines the credibility of this impeachment."

"I will say that it's suspicious that anybody would pay Hunter Biden as much money as they paid him without any expertise in the oil and gas industry ... so those things are suspicious. But again, there's no link directly to [then-] Vice President Biden's activities." he continued.

Republicans Double Down on Hunter Biden, Says Alexander Smirnov Arrest Would Not Affect Impeachment Inquiry

Despite this, however, Republicans are doubling down on their already-maligned attempt to impeach President Biden, with House Republicans now blaming the FBI over the debacle.

The revelation that Smirnov lied has some Republicans losing confidence in the impeachment inquiry, however, with House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer admitting that "the math keeps getting worse" for the Republican impeachment probe. Despite this, Republicans still want to impeach Biden.

Republican Rep. William Timmons of South Carolina told reporters on Wednesday that the arrest of their so-called star witness "does not have any impact" on their inquiry into the Bidens. "So whether the confidential human source lied to the FBI, I don't know, we'll find out," he said.

Fox News Silent on Alexander Smirnov Despite Hyping Him Up To Bring Down Joe and Hunter Biden

One of the factors that pushed Alexander Smirnov's profile as a "credible witness" in the Hunter Biden investigation is Fox News. Now that it was revealed he lied and is working with Russian intelligence, Fox News has gone silent in the matter, according to The New Yorker.

Fox News hosts like Sean Hannity have been very active in using Smirnov to slam the Bidens. However, there was no mention of the story on "Hannity" at all, nor was it anywhere on Fox News's prime-time programming.
