Hunter Biden Investigation: Republican Informant Alexander Smirnov, Who Was Indicted for Lying About Bidens, Had Ties to Russian Intelligence
After it turned out that the Republicans' witness against Hunter Biden was a Chinese agent, it was recently revealed that their other "credible" informant regarding President Joe Biden and his son's alleged ties to Russia and Ukraine, Alexander Smirnov, is the one who actually has ties to Russian intelligence.
Smirnov was an FBI informant until he was charged for lying about the Bidens, falsely claiming that they were involved in a multimillion-dollar bribery scheme with Ukrainian energy company, Burisma, with the false claims stating the company paid Hunter and Joe Biden $5 million each in 2015 or 2016.
These false claims from Smirnov became the central piece of information that Republicans used in their impeachment inquiry against Joe Biden in Congress after a previous witness, Gal Luft, fled the country after it was discovered he was a Chinese agent. This means that this is the second time that Kentucky Representative James Comer's alleged witnesses turned out to be foreign agents or have ties to other countries' intelligence operations.
According to PBS, prosecutors interviewed Smirnov last week and the former FBI witness against Hunter Biden admitted that "officials associated with Russian intelligence were involved in passing a story" about Hunter Biden. Prosecutors also found that Smirnov's contacts with Russia were "recent and extensive."
FBI Knew Republican Informant on Hunter Biden, Alexander Smirnov, Had Ties to Russian Intelligence
Prosecutors stated that Smirnov had plans to meet with one official during an upcoming overseas trip who was described as the "son of a former high-ranking government official" and "someone with ties to a particular Russian intelligence service."

However, as CBS News noted, the FBI already knew that he has contacts with foreign intelligence services, "including Russian intelligence agencies, and has had such contacts recently." Smirnov first became an FBI informant in 2010 and the agency had known about this already because he had already told his FBI handlers about it.
The ties Smirnov claims he has with Russian intelligence posed "a serious risk he will flee in order to avoid accountability for his actions," according to prosecutors, who added in their report, "He is actively peddling new lies that could impact U.S. elections after meeting with Russian intelligence officials in November."
Nevada Judge Releases Republican Informant Alexander Smirnov Despite Pleas from Prosecutors
Prosecutors revealed Smirnov's ties to Russian intelligence in their attempt to keep him in custody. However, a Nevada magistrate judge ordered him released on Tuesday despite what prosecutors revealed.
According to ABC News, however, Smirnov's release had some pretty tough conditions, as the former FBI and Republican informant must surrender his passport, wear an ankle monitor, and be restricted to traveling only to Nevada and to California for court purposes.
Despite his conditional release, prosecutors are still trying to seek his detention and have asked the judge overseeing Smirnov's case to intervene. They also asked the judge to hold an additional detention hearing if necessary, warning that t "foreign intelligence agencies could resettle Smirnov outside the United States if he were released."
