Marjorie Taylor Greene Files Motion To Oust House Speaker Mike Johnson After Passing Bill To Avert Government Shutdown
Georgia Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene was not very happy with fellow MAGA Republican, House Speaker Mike Johnson, for passing a measure to avert a government shutdown. She was so angry with him that she filed a motion to oust him as the Speaker of the House, potentially crippling Congress once again.
Greene stated that her motion was a "warning" for other Republicans and claimed that she did not want to "throw the House into chaos." However, many others saw the motion as another sign of Republican infighting and a brewing civil war within the Republican Party.
"I'm not saying that it won't happen in two weeks or it won't happen in a month or who knows when. But I am saying the clock has started. It's time for our conference to choose a new speaker," she said, adding that she has not discussed the motion to former President Donald Trump, who has previously stated that he wanted the government to fail so he could blame it on his election rival, President Joe Biden.
The government funding package to avert the government shutdown was passed before the House started a 2-week recess, with Greene passing the motion also before the recess. This means that the motion would not be considered until April 9.
A Mike Johnson spokesman, Raj Shah, told NBC News that the speaker's focus is "on governing. He will continue to push conservative legislation that secures our border, strengthens our national defense, and demonstrates how we'll grow our majority."
The motion also has the MAGAverse divided as Matt Gaetz, who pushed to oust Johnson's predecessor, Kevin McCarthy, says he will not support the motion.
"If we vacated this speaker, we'd end up with a Democrat. When I vacated the last one, I made a promise to the country that we would not end up with the Democrat speaker. And I was right. I couldn't make that promise again," Gaetz told reporters.

Bill To Avert Government Shutdown That Angered Marjorie Taylor Greene Goes To Senate Next
The bill that has triggered Greene into trying to oust Mike Johnson was rushed to be passed on Friday, with the House passing a $1.2 trillion budget with a 286 to 134 vote.
Business Insider noted that the ball to avert a government shutdown is now with the Senate, though it is still possible if some far-right senators try to throw up roadblocks to the legislation and drag it passed the deadline.
