Argentina soccer legend Angel Di Maria may be beloved in his home country, but he recently received some death threats, and two suspects have now been arrested in connection to that.

The death threats were sent to his home in his hometown of Rosario in Argentina, warning that he should not come home or one of his family members would be killed.

Because Di Maria was such a popular figure in Argentina, being one of the two goal scorers in that World Cup Final win over France, the government acted quickly with Argentina's Minister of Security Patricia Bullrich confirming the arrests of these three suspects.

One of the suspects is also under investigation for drug trafficking. That suspect confessed to the death threats that he and two others made against Angel Di Maria and his family in Rosario. They threatened the Argentine winger after Di Maria teased that he would return to the team with which he started his soccer career, Rosario Central.

Di Maria is currently under contract with Portuguese club Benfica and is staying with the team until June. Di Maria has teased that he is planning to come back "home" to Rosario Central and end his professional career there with several La Liga and UEFA Champions League titles already under his belt, along with the World Cup.

However, the plan has been thrown into doubt after a grey car drove by his family's Rosario home and fired into it and left a note warning against his Rosario Central return. Di Maria himself addressed the incident.

"I have my family and what was happening affects me," he said.

Despite being the hometown of two of Argentina's most legendary soccer stars, Angel Di Maria and Lionel Messi, Rosario is slowly becoming one of the country's most dangerous cities, with its murder rate going higher every year.

Rosario Central Condemns Death Threats Against Angel Di Maria

Soon after the death threats were made against Di Maria, Club Atletico Rosario Central issued a statement condemning the attack, according to Marca.

"We feel aggrieved, damaged, and harmed because this type of violent action is a direct attack on the economy and sporting success of the clubs," the statement read in Spanish. "It is unacceptable that they want to intimidate footballers or attack them and/or their families, who are the main protagonists of sporting events, just as violence against any member of the football family is unacceptable."

Angel Di Maria Leads Argentina in Win Against Costa Rica During Friendly Without Lionel Messi

Angel Di Maria did not let the death threats against him and his family dampen his excellent play in an international friendly against Costa Rica. During the match in Los Angeles, the "Angel of Argentina" scored a crucial goal to secure victory for the World Cup champions, even without superstar Lionel Messi.

According to GOAL, La Albiceleste struggled in the first half against the youthful Costa Rica team, but it was Di Maria who pulled them out of the mire as he scored a brilliant free-kick to energize his slumping teammates, leading to two additional goals. Argentina won 3-1.
