Donald Trump Hush Money Trial: Judge Rebukes Ex-POTUS, Warns Not to Intimidate Jurors as First 7 Chosen
The Donald Trump porn star hush money trial has finally entered day 2, and after hours of searching for an impartial juror, they only found seven, leading the judge to warn him about intimidating them as Trump would likely lash out should they find him to be guilty or just simply intimidate them so he could get acquitted or get a hung jury.
"I won't have any jurors intimidated in this courtroom," Judge Juan Merchan warned the former president.
The rebuke came after jury selection resumed after lunch, with the Trump team finding a video of one potential juror celebrating Trump's 2020 loss in the streets.
Following the video's revelation, Judge Merchan called the potential juror and asked her several questions. She left soon after, according to The Guardian, before Judge Merchan turned his attention to Trump and his lawyers.
"Your client was audible," Merchan pointed out to Trump's lawyers that their client was trying to intimidate the possible juror. "It was audible. He was gesturing and he was speaking in the direction of the juror."
"I will not have any jurors intimidated in this courtroom," warned the judge. "Take a minute to speak to your client."
It was supposed to only be a routine jury selection process, but the former president was seen gesturing and speaking in the direction of the female potential juror, possibly tainting her with his intimidation effort.
The first seven jurors have already been selected as of the end of the second day of the Trump trial, with 11 more still needed to complete the jury. The jury selection itself has proven challenging as it is difficult to find a juror with no opinions of Donald Trump, who made history in this trial as he became the first former president to be tried in a criminal trial.
Right-wing Personality Asks Potential Jurors in Donald Trump Hush Money Trial to Do Something Illegal
Meanwhile, as Trump was caught trying to intimidate potential jurors, right-wing broadcaster Clay Travis, an ardent Trump supporter, made a tweet to tell potential jurors to commit a felony so Trump could be freed.
He suggested that any Trump supporter "who is a part of the jury pool, do everything you can to get seated on the jury and then refuse to convict as a matter of principle, dooming the case via hung jury."
Yahoo! News warned that it is a federal crime to lie to get to a jury, as jurors are supposed to reach a verdict based solely on evidence presented during the trial. It has also been suggested that this tweet may also count as jury tampering, another felony that could land Travis in jail.
Judge Also Warns Donald Trump's Attorneys During the Trump Hush Money Trial
Meanwhile, the lead defense attorney for the Donald Trump hush money trial, Todd Blanche, was also rebuked several times by Judge Merchan for his lawyering., according to Business Insider.
Blanche was rebuked at least five times by the judge, including calling out the defense team's "thousands and thousands of pages of frivolous motions." Judge Merchan also pointed out that the letters in Blanche's pre-motion letter "has been getting increasingly smaller."
